FAAN Unveils Integrated Management System Policy to Strengthen Safety, Sustainability Toward World-Class Airport Operations
The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has reaffirmed its commitment to delivering safe, secure and high-quality airport services with the unveiling of its Integrated Management System (IMS) Policy, underscoring its drive towards operational excellence, sustainability and world-class service delivery across Nigeria’s airports.
In the policy statement signed by the Managing Director/Chief Executive, Mrs Olubunmi Kuku, FAAN said the IMS framework is central to the Authority’s statutory mandate of managing Federal Government-owned commercial airports nationwide, while balancing safety, security, environmental responsibility and stakeholder satisfaction.
According to FAAN, the policy is designed to ensure that airport operations consistently meet the highest standards of safety and operational integrity, while proactively identifying, managing and eliminating risks in line with global best practices. The Authority emphasised that the IMS integrates Quality, Health, Safety and Environment (QHSE) principles into all aspects of its business operations.
FAAN noted that the policy aligns with applicable laws, regulations and international standards, including the ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management System and the ISO 14001:2015 Environmental Management System. The Authority pledged to continually improve its integrated systems to enhance performance, protect the environment and ensure stakeholder confidence.
“The Authority remains committed to delivering premium, world-class services while making effective use of natural resources to support sustainable development within Nigeria’s aviation ecosystem,” the statement said.
As part of its commitments under the IMS Policy, FAAN pledged to ensure that airports and workplaces are safe, inclusive and conducive for all users, while preventing pollution, workplace injuries and ill health. It also committed to strict compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements related to environmental aspects, risks and hazards.
The policy further provides a structured framework for staff training, the setting and periodic review of IMS objectives and targets, as well as the documentation, implementation and continual improvement of the quality and environmental management system.
FAAN said IMS requirements would be clearly communicated to all personnel working under its control to ensure awareness of individual responsibilities and obligations.
In addition, FAAN highlighted its intention to promote transparency and openness in all quality and environmental matters, while actively engaging stakeholders, including passengers, host communities and industry partners.
The Authority also committed to contributing to the development of sustainable energy systems and technologies within the aviation sector.
Emphasising leadership by example, FAAN said it would demonstrate the importance of quality and environmental standards through hands-on leadership, responsible behaviour and continuous employee training. It also pledged to encourage learning from accidents and incidents to strengthen safety controls and prevent reoccurrence.
The policy also addresses workplace discipline and customer experience, with FAAN committing to the prevention of alcohol and drug use among employees, as well as ensuring excellent customer satisfaction through services that consistently meet their intended purpose and output.
FAAN stated that the IMS Policy would be communicated, understood and implemented across the Authority and linked to measurable and consistent IMS objectives.
The policy will be reviewed periodically to ensure its continued suitability and alignment with FAAN’s evolving business needs and strategic goals.
The Authority said the policy reflects its broader vision of building a safe, sustainable and globally competitive aviation sector that supports Nigeria’s economic growth and development.
