Investment in Officers’ Welfare a Call to Higher Responsibility – AGF Fagbemi

Facility Symbolises NDLEA’s Commitment to Staff Well-being, National Security – Marwa

The Federal Government on Tuesday, 18th February 2025, commissioned the first-ever barracks for the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Yola, Adamawa State – 35 years after the anti-narcotics agency was established.

The facility, which provides both office and residential accommodation for NDLEA personnel, was inaugurated with a charge to officers that the investment in their welfare is a call to higher responsibility and unwavering dedication to duty.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, described the new barracks as more than just a physical structure but a strategic investment in human capital.

He emphasised that the initiative underscores President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to creating a secure and dignified living environment for NDLEA officers and their families.

“The role of NDLEA in our society cannot be overstated,” Fagbemi stated. “The fight against drug abuse is a fight for our nation’s future. This barracks is more than a place of residence; it is a fortress of resilience and a beacon of hope for a safer, healthier society.”

The Attorney General reassured NDLEA personnel of his continued support, stressing that the facility is a critical component of the rule of law.

“This investment reinforces the principle that justice begins with those who enforce it. It is our collective responsibility to equip them with the necessary resources to carry out their duties effectively,” he said.

He further urged the NDLEA officers who will reside in the barracks to remain steadfast in their commitment to combating drug abuse and trafficking.

“This investment in your welfare is a call to higher responsibility, requiring unwavering dedication and resolute commitment. Today is not just about commissioning a building; it is a reaffirmation of our collective resolve to build a Nigeria where every citizen thrives, free from the scourge of illicit drugs,” Fagbemi declared.

The Minister commended former President Muhammadu Buhari, under whose leadership the project was approved, and lauded President Bola Tinubu for seeing it through to completion.

He also acknowledged the cooperation of Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, and the contributions of the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu.

In his remarks, the Chairman/Chief Executive of NDLEA, Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), highlighted the importance of the barracks project, especially in ensuring the safety of the Agency’s personnel.

“This year marks NDLEA’s 35th anniversary. Over the years, the lack of dedicated accommodation for our officers has exposed them and their families to severe risks. Some of our personnel have even been trailed to their homes and murdered. This barracks is, therefore, a long-overdue but timely intervention,” Marwa stated.

He expressed deep gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for his unwavering commitment to law enforcement and security, noting that the new facility is a testament to the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

Situated on an 18-hectare site in Kwanan Waya, Yola, the new barracks consists of modern administrative buildings, a detention facility, a state-of-the-art exhibit room, watchtowers, and operational pavilions.

The residential section includes lodges for state and zonal commanders, 80 one-bedroom terrace flats, 120 two-bedroom semi-detached flats, and 60 three-bedroom semi-detached flats.

Additionally, the complex features enhanced security infrastructure, an uninterrupted power supply system, parking spaces, a parade ground, and a perimeter fence.

“This facility is a bold statement of our commitment to the welfare of NDLEA personnel and our resolve to win the fight against drug abuse and trafficking in Nigeria,” Marwa asserted.

Governor Ahmadu Fintiri, in his message, commended President Tinubu, Marwa, and other key stakeholders for their foresight and dedication to tackling drug-related crimes.

“This barracks is not just about bricks and mortar; it is about fortifying our collective resolve to protect our people – particularly our youth – from the menace of illicit drugs,” the governor stated.

Speaking on behalf of the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, AIG Rex Dundun lauded the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening national security institutions.

“The NDLEA plays a critical role in safeguarding Nigeria’s health, safety, and well-being. This milestone is a clear demonstration of the government’s appreciation of the sacrifices made by NDLEA personnel,” Ribadu said.

Also addressing the gathering, Senator Ibrahim Dankwambo, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Drugs and Narcotics, emphasised the need for continuous investment in NDLEA’s workforce, stating that adequate motivation is crucial for effective law enforcement.

House of Representatives Committee Chairman on Narcotic Drugs, Hon. Abass Adigun, represented by his deputy, Hon. Idris Dankawu, reiterated the National Assembly’s commitment to securing better funding, improved working conditions, and enhanced operational capacity for NDLEA.

The commissioning ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha; Senator Francis Fadahunsi; members of the National Assembly from Adamawa State; and first-class traditional rulers.

With this landmark achievement, the NDLEA now has a secure and dignified housing facility for its officers, a significant step towards enhancing morale, operational efficiency, and the fight against illicit drug trafficking.
