FG Introduces 50% Train Fare Reduction Nationwide for Eid-el-Kabir Festivities

In a bid to ease the financial burden of travel during the forthcoming Eid-el-Kabir celebrations, the Federal Government has approved a 50 per cent discount on all passenger train services operated by the Nigerian Railway Corporation across the country.

The initiative, announced by the Federal Ministry of Transportation, is expected to provide relief to thousands of Nigerians travelling to various destinations for the Muslim festival.

According to the ministry, the temporary fare reduction became effective on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, and will remain valid until Monday, June 1, 2026.

The government explained that all ticket prices on NRC passenger routes have been cut by half within the stated period, allowing commuters to enjoy more affordable transportation as movement increases ahead of the holiday.

The announcement was conveyed in a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Funsho Adebiyi, who said the gesture underscores the administration’s commitment to supporting Nigerians during festive seasons through people-oriented policies.

The statement further clarified that passengers who purchased tickets before the fare reduction was announced would also benefit from the initiative.

Such passengers, it noted, would receive a 50 per cent rebate which could be reused for subsequent train journeys on or before June 1, 2026.

Despite the discounted fares, the ministry stated that there would be no alteration to existing train operations, adding that all schedules and departure timetables would continue as earlier published by the railway corporation.

Industry observers believe the move could lead to increased patronage of rail transport during the Sallah period, especially amid rising road transport fares and growing concerns over the cost of inter-state travel.

The Federal Ministry of Transportation expressed gratitude to Nigerians for their continued support of government programmes and urged passengers to comply with safety and operational guidelines while using train services during the festive season.

The ministry also extended warm wishes to Muslim faithful across the country, praying for a peaceful and memorable Eid-el-Kabir celebration.
“Eid Mubarak,” the statement concluded.
