Ekperikpe Ekpo; Stakeholder Relations Head, Savannah, Nkoyo Etuk; and Operations Superintendent, Savannah, Chukwudoziem Umunna, during the Minister's visit to Savannah's gas facility in Uquo, Akwa Ibom, on October 7.

The Federal Government of Nigeria has expressed its appreciation for the substantial investments made by Savannah Energy, a British independent energy company, in Nigeria’s energy sector.

The commendation was made by the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Rt. Hon. Ekperikpe Ekpo, during a recent visit to the Uquo gas Central Processing Facility in Akwa Ibom State.

This facility, owned by Accugas Limited, a subsidiary of Savannah Energy, plays a pivotal role in supporting Nigeria’s gas needs.

Speaking during the visit, the Minister lauded Savannah Energy’s commitment, noting that the company’s investment has significantly boosted the domestic gas supply, which is crucial for the nation’s energy security.

Savannah currently supplies gas that supports approximately 20% of Nigeria’s thermal power generation capacity, a major contribution to the country’s electricity grid.

Rt. Hon. Ekpo further highlighted the importance of the gas sector in driving Nigeria’s economic growth. He stated, “His Excellency, President Bola Tinubu, is very intentional and strategic about developing the gas sector to drive the economy of this nation.

“We know that if the economy of Nigeria is driven by gas, it will make things easier, and that is the target of the ‘Decade of Gas’ initiative. Our goal is to ensure that by 2030, the Nigerian economy will be powered by gas.”

The Minister’s remarks reflect the administration’s commitment to enhancing gas infrastructure and supply, which is expected to play a pivotal role in achieving the country’s net-zero carbon goals.

The ‘Decade of Gas’ initiative aims to make gas the backbone of Nigeria’s energy transformation.

In his address, Managing Director of Savannah Energy Nigeria, Pade Durotoye, who was present during the tour, elaborated on the company’s efforts to strengthen the country’s gas infrastructure.

“Since 2014, through Accugas Limited, we have invested over US$1.6 billion in gas processing and transportation infrastructure to support the domestic market. Additionally, we are investing US$45 million in a new compression system at the Uquo facility,” Durotoye said.

The new system, which is expected to become operational later this year, will significantly enhance the facility’s capacity by increasing gas export pressure and ensuring reliable supply to customers.

Durotoye also stressed Savannah Energy’s support for the Federal Government’s adoption of natural gas as a transitional fuel in the country’s pursuit of a net-zero pathway.

He pointed out that Accugas has built a 200 million standard cubic feet per day (MMscfpd) gas processing facility and a 260km gas pipeline network to serve the domestic market.

“Our gas is consumed entirely within Nigeria. Eighty percent of it goes to thermal power generation companies, and the remaining 20% is supplied to major industrial customers, including cement producers. Accugas currently supports about 10% of Nigeria’s cement production,” Durotoye added, highlighting the broad impact of Savannah Energy’s investments.

Savannah Energy’s efforts in the energy sector align with the Federal Government’s vision of using gas to transform the economy and meet the nation’s growing energy demands while transitioning towards cleaner energy sources.

Savannah Energy PLC is a British independent energy company committed to delivering essential energy projects across Africa.

Through its subsidiary, Accugas Limited, Savannah has established itself as a key player in Nigeria’s domestic gas market.
