Fire incident at E54 Passenger Air Bridge prompts flight diversions at Lagos airport

A fire incident at the E54 Passenger Air Bridge of the Murtala Muhammed Airport (MMA) Terminal 1 in Lagos, Nigeria, caused disruptions in flight operations earlier today.

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), through its Director, Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Mrs Obiageli Orah, has issued a press release detailing the incident.

According to the release, smoke was first detected at 05:29 hrs, prompting immediate action from electrical engineers who swiftly cut off power to the entire E Wing of the terminal.

FAAN explained further that the Airport Rescue and Firefighting Services (ARFFS) team arrived at the scene promptly by 05:30 hrs.

According to the agency, initial investigations suggest that sparks from an electrical unit may have ignited the fire, but added that a comprehensive inquiry is underway to determine the exact cause.

“Efforts to contain the fire were successful, and by 06:41 hrs, the situation was under control.

“However, smoke ventilation efforts are still ongoing to ensure the safety and comfort of passengers and staff,” said FAAN.

In response to the incident, FAAN said all flight operations in Terminal 1 have been redirected to the D Wing of the airport.
