In a renewed push to elevate Nigeria’s aviation infrastructure and operational standards, the Chairman of the Board of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Dr. Umar Abdullahi Ganduje, CON, on Tuesday, November 11, led members of the Authority’s Board of Directors on an extensive inspection tour of the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport (MAKIA).

The visit underscored FAAN’s commitment to modernising airport facilities and improving service delivery, particularly in the northern region of the country.

The high-powered delegation comprised FAAN’s Managing Director and Chief Executive, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku; Board Secretary and Director of Legal Services, Mrs. Bridget Gold; Engr. Nasiru Muazu; and Dr. Ahmad Ibrahim Suleiman, both members of the FAAN Board.

Also on the entourage was the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Mr. Henry Agbebire, who provided insights on the Authority’s stakeholder engagement and communication strategies in line with its transformation agenda.

During the inspection, the team visited key operational areas including the Fire Bay, Water Treatment Plant, and both the Domestic and International Terminals. They also assessed airside infrastructure critical to safety and operational efficiency at the airport.

While commending FAAN for maintaining visible operational standards, Dr. Ganduje stressed the urgent need to accelerate ongoing infrastructural projects and address existing deficits to ensure improved passenger experience and service quality.

In his typically decisive manner, the FAAN Board Chairman issued a two-week ultimatum to the contractor handling the domestic terminal project to complete all pending works, including the VIP Lounge, warning that delays would no longer be tolerated.

“The Board is determined to ensure that all airports under FAAN’s management embody the Authority’s renewed culture of excellence, accountability, and efficiency,” Ganduje said, emphasising that infrastructure renewal remains a key driver of the Authority’s broader reform objectives.

The visit carried symbolic significance for Dr. Ganduje, who served two terms as Governor of Kano State. It was described as a “homecoming” that reflected his deep connection to the city and his determination to see Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport restored to its historic place of pride.

Board members and FAAN management expressed optimism about repositioning MAKIA as a hub of regional progress and economic vitality in northern Nigeria.

FAAN, under the leadership of Mrs. Kuku, reaffirmed its commitment to upholding world-class standards in safety, infrastructure renewal, and customer service, in alignment with the strategic vision of the Honourable Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development.
