Governor Zulum Strengthens Ties with Nigeria Customs, Emphasises Strategic Collaboration on Border Security

Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum has sought strategic collaboration with the Nigeria Customs Service to bolster the state’s trade and border security efforts.

The Governor, who paid a visit to the Comptroller General of Customs (CGC), Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, on Friday, August 16, 2024, expressed gratitude for the role of customs in border security and sought for stronger ties between the Borno State government and the NCS.

Zulum, who underscored the strategic importance of Borno State, highlighted its unique position as a border state, sharing boundaries with three neighboring countries: Cameroon, Chad, and Niger. 

During the meeting, he stressed the need for a robust and strategic partnership to address the complex security and trade challenges that come with such a geographical position.

“We are grateful for the dedication and assistance the Nigeria Customs Service has provided to Borno State. 

“Our borders with Cameroon, Chad, and Niger require robust management, and we are keen to strengthen our relationship with the Nigeria Customs Service to ensure the safety and prosperity of our state,” Governor Zulum stated.

Governor Zulum acknowledged the continuous support provided by the NCS in facilitating trade and ensuring border security, which are critical to the state’s economic stability and development. 

He expressed deep appreciation for the unwavering commitment shown by CGC Adeniyi and his team in addressing the unique challenges faced by Borno State.

In response, CGC Bashir Adewale Adeniyi expressed his gratitude for the Governor’s visit and reaffirmed the Nigeria Customs Service’s dedication to supporting Borno State. 

“We appreciate the support we have received from Borno State in carrying out our core responsibilities. The Customs Service is committed to enhancing and facilitating legitimate trade while ensuring the protection of our borders,” CGC Adeniyi assured.

The meeting concluded on a positive note, with Governor Zulum extending an invitation to CGC Adeniyi to visit Borno State. 

He emphasised the importance of building on the existing partnership to further strengthen the ties between the state and the Nigeria Customs Service, ensuring continued collaboration in the areas of trade facilitation and border security.

The visit was part of the ongoing commitment of the Borno State government to work closely with federal agencies to enhance security and economic development, particularly in the face of the unique challenges posed by its strategic location.
