Grand Opening of Akwaaba African Travel Exhibition Sets Tone for Exciting Events
The vibrant city of Lagos came alive today – Sunday, September 22, 2024, with the grand opening of the Akwaaba African Travel Exhibition, a landmark event in the continent’s tourism industry.
Now in its 20th year, the exhibition has become a global showcase for African tourism, hospitality, and culture, drawing in participants from across the world to celebrate the richness of Africa’s travel potential.
Held at the prestigious Eko Hotel and Suites in Lagos, Nigeria, the opening ceremony was a dazzling display of African heritage, featuring cultural performances, traditional music, and a spirit of unity among the diverse nations represented.
Attendees were greeted by an atmosphere of excitement, as exhibitors from many African countries, including Arabs and Indians, set up colourful booths to display their unique offerings, from scenic travel destinations to hospitality innovations.
In his welcome address, Ambassador Ikechi Uko, the organiser and visionary behind Akwaaba, highlighted the growing impact of tourism on the African continent that catches global attention.
Reflecting on the journey that began two decades ago, Uko explained the motivation behind creating the largest travel market in West Africa.
“I wanted to create a platform where Africa could be marketed not just to the world, but within the continent itself,” Uko said. “It made no sense to me that we had to travel to London to showcase Africa. Why not do it right here on our soil? That’s how the idea for Akwaaba was born.”
Uko credited industry stakeholders like the management of Eko Hotels and the former General Manager of British Airways for their early support, which helped transform his vision into reality.
He expressed his joy at seeing the continued growth of the event over the years, despite challenges, adding, “Nigeria is ripe for tourism. This platform has been instrumental in linking the Nigerian travel business to the global market.”
The highlight of the ceremony was the cultural parade showcased by the Calabar dance troupe, where the performers gave an appetizer of cultural displays yet to be seen.
Another captivating festivity was the highly anticipated annual Jollof Rice War – a lively culinary competition among chefs from various African countries.
The presence of Miss Tourism contestants from various African countries also added a further touch of glamour to the proceedings.
This year’s exhibition also features special pavilions focusing on eco-tourism, luxury travel, and innovations in the digital landscape, reflecting the evolving demands of modern travellers.
The atmosphere was electric, as exhibitors, including Memorial Hospitals Group from Turkey, Royal Senchi Hotels from Ghana, MTN Nigeria, Ekiti State, Cinderella Travels and Tours, Skyway Aviation Handling Company PLC, The Gambia Tourism, Eko Hotels and Suites, Ethiopian Airlines, and Ibom Air, set up their booths, ready to engage potential partners and visitors alike.
Akwaaba African Travel Exhibition will run until the 24th of September, offering an array of seminars, networking events, and business opportunities for stakeholders in the travel and hospitality industries.
As the largest travel event in West Africa, it is set to strengthen Africa’s position on the global tourism map, ushering in a new era of connectivity, growth, and cultural exchange.
The opening day has set the tone for what promises to be a memorable celebration of Africa’s boundless potential, leaving attendees inspired and eager to explore the wonders of the continent.
