Keyamo Conducts Late-night Inspection of Lagos Airport, as FAAN Intensifies Response to Fire Incident
Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, undertook an urgent late-night journey from Abuja to Lagos on Monday in response to the fire incident that broke out at Terminal 1 of Murtala Muhammed International Airport, signalling the Federal Government’s swift intervention following the emergency.
The visit, which occurred at about 11:50 p.m., saw the minister meet directly with the leadership and operational teams of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), who were still on site directing firefighting, rescue, and safety operations.
Officials confirmed that emergency teams remained fully deployed at the time to ensure that the blaze was completely subdued and that all risks were brought under control.
During his inspection, the minister praised the rapid mobilisation of airport emergency responders and security personnel, stating that their disciplined adherence to established procedures played a decisive role in protecting lives and minimising structural damage.
He highlighted that effective crisis coordination within the aviation sector is essential for maintaining public confidence, especially during unexpected incidents involving critical infrastructure.
Keyamo subsequently ordered FAAN’s management alongside other relevant aviation agencies to assemble at the airport by 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, 24 February 2026, for a comprehensive joint inspection of the affected terminal.
The planned assessment, according to officials, is intended to determine the full extent of the damage, chart a recovery roadmap, and confirm that all regulatory safety and operational standards are satisfied before normal activities resume.
He reiterated the Federal Government’s unwavering commitment to passenger welfare, infrastructure protection, and the rapid restoration of airport services, assuring travellers that authorities are prioritising both safety and efficiency as recovery measures proceed.
The statement conveying details of the minister’s visit was signed by Henry Agbebire, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, who noted that additional updates would be communicated as investigations and rehabilitation efforts continue.
