Keyamo Vows to Boost Local Content in Aviation, Protect Workers’ Rights

The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s aviation sector by implementing policies that prioritise local economic growth, protect workers’ rights, and enhance infrastructural development.
Speaking at the Aviation Stakeholders’ Forum held at the Radisson Blu Hotel, Ikeja, Lagos, Keyamo reiterated the government’s stance on supporting indigenous businesses, particularly in the catering sector, by mandating foreign airlines to patronise local service providers.
He made it clear that compliance with this directive would influence the approval of airline schedules.
“I have said it before, and I am saying it again—foreign airlines should patronise indigenous caterers. Otherwise, I will not sign the summer schedule,” Keyamo declared.
To enforce this policy, he directed the Director-General of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Capt. Chris Najomo, to initiate immediate discussions with airlines to ensure adherence.
The forum was attended by key aviation stakeholders, including Dr. Abubakar D. Kana, mni, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, as well as heads of aviation agencies.
During discussions, aviation workers’ unions raised concerns over restrictions placed on union activities by some airlines.
Addressing these grievances, Keyamo directed the NCAA to commence dialogue with airlines to ensure workers’ rights to union membership and activities are upheld.
He also assured union leaders of their involvement in the government’s airport concession plans, emphasising transparency and collaboration.
To facilitate this, he pledged to instruct his Special Assistant on Public-Private Partnerships (SA PPP) to engage union representatives and keep them informed throughout the process.
Keyamo revealed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has concluded plans for the reconstruction of Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos.
He also noted that some smaller airports might be concessioned to improve operational efficiency and service delivery.
The Stakeholders’ Forum served as a platform for open dialogue between the government, aviation agencies, and industry players, reinforcing a collective dedication to fostering a sustainable and competitive aviation sector.
