The Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) for the construction of the Lekki-Epe Link Bridge.

The announcement was made during the ongoing China-Africa Cooperation Summit, held from September 4-6, where the governor is currently in attendance.

Governor Sanwo-Olu, who communicated the development via a statement on his official X account today – Wednesday, September 4th, 2024, highlighted that the Lekki-Epe Link Bridge project is an integral component of the state’s strategic transport master plan.

The project aims to improve road networks, alleviate traffic congestion, enhance commuting efficiency, and foster economic growth in the Lekki-Epe axis and beyond.

“Our strategic transport master plan is not just a blueprint; it’s a commitment to improving the lives of all Lagosians. By focusing on key road networks, we aim to reduce traffic congestion and create a seamless commuting experience, all while supporting economic growth,” the governor’s statement read.

According to the statement, discussions are already in advanced stages to award the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contract to CCECC.

Notably, the feasibility and design studies for the bridge have been completed, marking significant progress in the project’s journey from concept to implementation.

The EPC model under consideration ensures that the contractor will be responsible for the design, procurement, and construction phases, delivering a fully operational bridge on schedule.

In a related development, Governor Sanwo-Olu revealed the signing of another crucial MoU, this time focusing on the implementation of solar power systems across key tertiary institutions in the state.

The institutions set to benefit from this initiative include Lagos State University and its campuses, Lagos State University of Science and Technology, Lagos State University of Education, and Lagos State College of Medicine.

The signing of the MoU was witnessed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, underscoring the importance of this initiative to the state’s and the nation’s educational infrastructure.

“We also signed another MoU to implement solar power systems across our tertiary institutions,” the statement continued, emphasising the state government’s commitment to sustainable energy solutions.

The solar power project is expected to generate approximately 50 MW of clean and affordable electricity, providing these institutions with a sustainable and cost-effective energy solution.

The Governor noted that this initiative aligns with the state government’s broader economic development strategy, reflecting a strong commitment to integrating sustainable energy as a core element of Lagos State’s future growth.

These forward-looking approaches to infrastructural and energy challenges set the stage for a more efficient and sustainable urban environment in the state.
