LAMATA Bus Driver Arrested Over Fatal Hit-and-Run at Ikeja Airport Bus Stop

The Airport Police Command has arrested a commercial bus driver in connection with a fatal hit-and-run accident that claimed the life of a 19-year-old female pedestrian at the Airport Bus Stop, Ikeja, Lagos State.

The tragic incident occurred on Friday, 9 January 2026, and involved an Ashok Leyland bus operated under the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) scheme, bearing registration number MUS-139-YL.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the bus struck the young woman moments after she had alighted at the Airport Bus Stop and was walking towards the airport.

Eyewitnesses and concerned passersby reportedly rushed the victim to the Air Force Base Hospital, Ikeja, in a desperate bid to save her life.

However, police operatives who arrived at the hospital following a distress report were informed by medical personnel that the victim was dead on arrival, having sustained severe injuries from the impact.

In the aftermath of the incident, the Airport Police Command immediately commenced a thorough investigation and launched a coordinated manhunt to apprehend the driver, who had fled the scene.

As part of the investigative process, the Command engaged LAMATA to assist in tracking the vehicle involved and identifying the suspect driver.

The collaboration yielded results, leading to the identification and location of the driver. Officials of LAMATA subsequently brought the suspect to the Domestic Police Division of the Airport Command.

The driver, identified as Mr Adewale Abiodun, has been taken into police custody and has made a statement in relation to the incident, as investigations continue.

Reacting to the development, the Commissioner of Police, Airport Command, CP Ogunbode Olufunke, Mnips, PhD, described the incident as a grave and unfortunate loss of life.

She assured the public that the Command is committed to ensuring justice for the deceased and her family.

The Commissioner emphasised that negligence, reckless driving and hit-and-run incidents will not be tolerated, warning that offenders will face the full weight of the law.

She further urged motorists to exercise caution and adhere strictly to traffic regulations, while also advising pedestrians to remain vigilant on public roads.

According to her, preventing such avoidable tragedies requires collective responsibility from all road users.

Police authorities confirmed that upon the conclusion of investigations, the suspect will be arraigned before a court of competent jurisdiction.

The development was disclosed in a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, Airport Command, ASP Mohammed Adeola, on Monday, 12 January 2026.
