League of Nigerian Columnists Mourns Former Vice President Yakubu Mohammed
The League of Nigerian Columnists (LNC) has announced with deep sorrow the passing of Yakubu Mohammed, a highly respected columnist, administrator and former Vice President of the League, describing his death as a profound loss to Nigeria’s intellectual and public life.
In a statement signed by its Secretary General, Prof. Anthony Kila, the LNC said Mohammed was a towering figure within the organisation, whose leadership, wisdom and institutional knowledge played a pivotal role in strengthening the League’s growth, credibility and principled engagement in public discourse.
According to the statement, Mohammed served the League with distinction, not merely as an office holder but as a guiding mentor, trusted counsellor and dependable pillar of support. His contributions, the LNC noted, left an indelible mark on the organisation and on all those who had the privilege of working closely with him.
“Yakubu Mohammed stood as a venerable figure whose leadership was marked by steadfastness, sound judgement and a deep commitment to intellectual integrity,” the League said, adding that his influence helped shape the LNC’s voice and standing in Nigeria’s democratic and intellectual conversations.
Beyond his involvement with the League, Mohammed was widely respected as a principled administrator and former university Pro-Chancellor. In these roles, he was known for his unwavering integrity, discipline and firm belief in the power of strong institutions to drive societal transformation.
Colleagues and associates regarded him as a model of ethical leadership and public responsibility.
The LNC further highlighted Mohammed’s contributions as a columnist and writer, describing his work as marked by clarity of thought, moral seriousness and a consistent dedication to reasoned debate and national development.
His writings, the statement said, challenged complacency, elevated public discourse and made meaningful contributions to Nigeria’s democratic evolution.
“The death of Yakubu Mohammed is not only a loss to the League of Nigerian Columnists, but to the broader community of journalists, writers, scholars, administrators and public intellectuals across the country,” the statement noted. “His voice, discernment and exemplary character will be sorely missed.”
The League expressed its deepest condolences to Mohammed’s family, friends, colleagues and all those whose lives were touched by his work and character, describing him as a truly inspiring individual whose legacy would endure.
In honour of his memory, the LNC said it was recommitting itself to the values Mohammed embodied, including unwavering intellectual honesty, a strong sense of public duty and the responsible use of words in service to society.
The League prayed for the peaceful repose of his soul and affirming that his contributions would continue to resonate within Nigeria’s intellectual and literary landscape.
