Man electrocuted attempting to steal electrical cables at Lagos airport, FAAN tightens security
A middle-aged man attempting to steal electrical cables and other equipment from the powerhouse of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) was electrocuted, a statement from the agency has revealed.
The man, whose identity remains unknown, had infiltrated the power generating building and started disconnecting installations supplying power to Lagos airport before meeting his tragic end.
Confirming the incident on Monday, Mrs. Kuku, Managing Director of FAAN, emphasised the agency’s commitment to eliminating security breaches at airports nationwide.
Speaking at the commissioning of 30 Special Forces assigned to secure Lagos airport, she acknowledged past incidents where unauthorised individuals breached perimeter fences, stole airfield lighting equipment, or posed threats to workers on site.
“Our environment is quite unique with national security challenges, yet we have been fortunate to avoid major incidents within the airport premises.
“However, we do face individual security issues. Recently, an individual entered our powerhouse and was electrocuted during an attempted theft,” Mrs. Kuku remarked.
Highlighting the importance of the new security measures, Mrs. Kuku revealed that FAAN had been preparing for the unveiling of this security apparatus for the past six months.
The preparations included extensive investments in armoury, training personnel, and acquiring arms and ammunition.
Addressing the newly commissioned security personnel, Mrs. Kuku stated, “You have been specially selected to be part of this elite unit. Our hope is that your presence will serve as a deterrent, reducing the need to use force. It is crucial that you work closely with other security agencies at the airport to maintain a safe and secure environment.”
Expressing her optimism, she added, “We are delighted to have you on board and look forward to seeing your performance in your duties. The Honourable Minister, the National Security Adviser, and the President send their warm regards and fully support this initiative.”
Mrs. Kuku also highlighted FAAN’s ongoing efforts to combat corruption, touting, and illicit activities at airport terminals nationwide.
She stressed collaboration with various security agencies, including the Air Force, police, and civil defense, to enhance intelligence and security measures.
“Today marks a significant milestone in our journey. We count on you to make us proud and assure you of our full support,” she concluded.
