Bi-Courtney Aviation Services Limited (BASL), operators of the Murtala Muhammed Airport Terminal Two (MMA2), has reaffirmed its commitment to environmental stewardship by joining the global community in marking this year’s World Cleanup Day.

The event, which took place on Friday at the Hajj Park wing of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, saw BASL staff mobilised for a cleanup exercise as part of the worldwide campaign aimed at tackling waste and promoting sustainability.

World Cleanup Day, commemorated annually on 20 September, brings together more than 200 governments, citizens, and organisations across the globe in a united effort to confront waste challenges and raise environmental consciousness.

The 2025 edition carried the theme “Tackling Fast-Growing Challenges: Textile and Fashion Waste”, spotlighting the mounting issue of discarded clothing and materials that contribute significantly to pollution.

Led by the company’s Head of Safety, Nafisat Adeniran, the BASL team not only cleaned the park but also donated waste bins to encourage proper disposal practices and promote environmental hygiene.

Adeniran explained that the initiative reflects the company’s dedication to sustainability beyond aviation services.

“Our mission extends beyond managing a world-class terminal; we are dedicated to fostering a cleaner and safer environment for the entire community,” she stated. “This is a small step, but it reinforces our belief that a collective effort can create a significant positive impact.”

Echoing this sentiment, BASL’s Acting Chief Operating Officer stressed that the cleanup was part of the company’s wider corporate social responsibility (CSR) goals.

“We believe in giving back to the community,” he said. “The donation of these bins is a symbol of our commitment to not just a clean airport, but a clean city. We are proud to contribute to the global effort of making our planet a healthier place.”

He further noted that the initiative aligns with BASL’s broader vision of setting benchmarks not only in aviation services but also in environmental responsibility.

Adding a wider perspective, BASL’s Head of Corporate Communications, Ajoke Yinka-Olawuyi, emphasised the link between waste management and climate action.

“At BASL, we view sustainability as an interconnected responsibility. Waste management plays a critical role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, including CO₂, which is a key focus area for airports globally,” she explained.

“By supporting World Cleanup Day, we are not only promoting environmental hygiene but also contributing to broader climate action goals. Every initiative, whether in reducing waste or lowering emissions, reinforces our commitment to building a cleaner, safer, and more sustainable future for aviation and the communities we serve,” she added.

With its active participation in World Cleanup Day, BASL has once again demonstrated that its vision extends far beyond the confines of the airport terminal – standing as a symbol of leadership in sustainability and corporate responsibility in Nigeria’s aviation sector.
