MTN Nigeria Becomes Headline Sponsor of 20th Akwaaba African Travel Market

Leading telecommunications giant, MTN Nigeria, has been announced as the headline sponsor for the 20th edition of the Akwaaba African Travel Market, West Africa’s premier travel and tourism event. 

This marks MTN Nigeria’s inaugural participation in the prestigious event, underlining its commitment to fostering growth and innovation across Africa through technology.

The partnership signifies a strategic collaboration between MTN Nigeria and the travel industry, as the telecommunications leader continues its transformation from a traditional telecom provider to a comprehensive technology solutions company. 

MTN Nigeria’s involvement at Akwaaba 2024 aims to demonstrate how technology can revolutionise business operations, particularly within the travel and hospitality sectors. 

The company offers a wide range of innovative services tailored to meet the needs of micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), large enterprises, and the public sector, enhancing operational efficiency, streamlining processes, and driving success.

Speaking of the partnership, MTN Nigeria expressed its excitement in contributing to the growth of Africa’s travel industry by providing technological expertise and solutions to empower businesses. 

The company’s participation is set to lead the discourse on the role of technology in driving increased productivity within the hospitality sector.

The 20th edition of the Akwaaba African Travel Market, scheduled to begin on Sunday, 22nd September, will focus on transitioning Africa’s travel and tourism industry from traditional models to a technology-driven economy. 

Throughout the three-day event, MTN Nigeria will host a panel of distinguished experts, including Ifeanyi Otudoh, Senior Manager of Converged Solutions; Joshua Chijioke, Head of Business Development at Chenosis; Omowunmi Olatunbosun, Head of SME Segments, Enterprise Business; Akinbulejo Onabolu, Head of Public Sector and Large Enterprise; and Bayo Omomowo, Head of Information Technology at MoMo PSB.

The event will also feature renowned speakers from across Africa, such as Davidson Mugisha from Rwanda, Dr. Adama Bah from The Gambia, Ahmed Naaman from Ghana, and Nigeria’s own entertainment mogul, Edi Lawani. Adding to the prestige of the event, the Namibian Ambassador to Nigeria, His Excellency Humphrey Geiseb, will also be in attendance.

Among the highlights of the event will be the Africa Travel 100 Awards, taking place on Monday, 23rd September, which will honour individuals who have made outstanding contributions to Africa’s travel industry. 

Additionally, the widely popular Jollof Rice War will officially open the expo on Sunday, while the Youth Tourism Session on Tuesday will host Nigeria’s Minister of Tourism, Mrs. Lola Ade-John, as the special guest.

The event will culminate on Tuesday, 24th September, with the Lagos Day Celebrations. 

The Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture will showcase the state’s rich tourism potential, while the prestigious Fatima Garbati Tourism Outreach Grant, worth N5 million, will be awarded to young tour operators and tourism departments, demonstrating the event’s dedication to fostering growth and innovation within the sector.

MTN Nigeria’s participation in Akwaaba 2024 further solidifies its role as a leader in digital transformation, empowering industries to thrive in an increasingly technology-driven world. 

Through this partnership, MTN seeks to push the boundaries of what is possible for African businesses, particularly in the travel and hospitality sectors.
