NAMA Pledges Stronger Workforce Development, Safety Culture at ATS Retreat
The Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) has reiterated its commitment to strengthening human capacity, enhancing organisational culture, and improving the overall safety and efficiency of Nigeria’s air navigation services.
This assurance was delivered during the opening session of the Directorate of Air Traffic Services (ATS) Retreat held in Ibadan, Oyo State.
Although the Managing Director/Chief Executive of NAMA was unavoidably absent, his address was presented on his behalf by the Director of Human Resources and Administration, Abimbola Ladipo, Esq., who conveyed warm greetings from the Agency’s Management team.
In his remarks, the NAMA chief praised the Directorate of Air Traffic Services for convening what he described as a “timely and visionary retreat,” noting that Ibadan’s historic setting provided the ideal atmosphere for reflection and strategic planning.
He commended the daily commitment and professionalism of Air Traffic Services personnel, describing them as “the guardians of safety in our skies – silent yet vigilant protectors” who maintain order, efficiency, and predictability in an increasingly complex airspace.
Despite working under demanding conditions, he said, ATS officers continue to demonstrate precision and resilience, earning the Agency’s profound appreciation.
The Managing Director underscored the relevance of this year’s retreat theme, “Empowering People, Elevating Safety: Advancing Air Traffic Services Through Training and Culture (A Skilled Team for a Safer Sky),” stressing that Nigeria’s aviation future depends largely on the quality of its personnel.
“While airspace infrastructure is crucial, and technology indispensable, it is the human element that remains paramount,” he affirmed. “Safety is not delivered by technology alone – it is delivered by people.”
He emphasised that even the most advanced systems still require skilled professionals capable of making swift, informed decisions.
According to him, Nigeria’s transformation in air navigation services will only be realised through sustained investment in training, leadership development, personal growth, and a strong organisational culture.

The retreat, he said, offers an opportunity for participants to assess current realities, examine gaps, and shape a clear vision for the future of Air Traffic Services in the country.
He urged attendees to reflect on emerging global trends, adapt to evolving ICAO standards, and confront the growing complexity of Nigeria’s airspace with innovative solutions.
Reaffirming Management’s support, he assured ATS personnel of continued investment in tools, training, and a work environment that enables them to thrive.
He also noted that ongoing modernisation efforts and capacity-building initiatives are designed to ensure every officer feels valued, supported, and empowered.
“I encourage all participants to engage fully in this retreat with open minds and the bravery to pose challenging questions,” he stated. “The outcomes of your discussions will be instrumental in guiding policies that empower our workforce and further improve the safety, efficiency, and reliability of air navigation services.”
He concluded by applauding the leadership and dedication of the Directorate of Air Traffic Services, describing their contributions as “vital and indispensable” to the strength of Nigeria’s aviation sector.
