NBTE Concludes Inspection of NiMet’s Training Centre for Proposed Diploma Programs
The National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), headed by Mal. Ismaila Tanko, Director of Monotechnic Programmes, concluded a comprehensive advisory and resource inspection visit at the Nigerian Meteorological Agency’s (NiMet) Oshodi-Lagos training facilities over the weekend.
This exercise, which took place from July 25 to July 27, 2024, aimed to accredit the National Diploma (ND) programs in Meteorology and Climate Change Sciences proposed by NiMet for its NiMet/WMO Regional Training Centre.
During the inspection, the NBTE team thoroughly evaluated various facilities, including the library, classrooms, student hostels, medical clinic, weather equipment, weather station, agricultural facilities, equipment fabrication and furniture workshops, printing section, GIS and ICT facilities, staffing, and other resources available at the centre.
In a debriefing session with Prof. Charles Anosike, DG/CEO of NiMet, represented by Prof. Peter Odjugo, Director of Research and Training, Mal. Ismaila Tanko, along with Dr. (Mrs) Kubura Jauro, Deputy Director of the Specialised Division, and Mr. Nsan Tiku Nsan, Deputy Director of the Monotechnic Support Division, expressed satisfaction with NiMet’s cooperation throughout the inspection.
“The outcome of the inspection will be communicated to NiMet management within a short time,” Mal. Tanko stated.
Prof. Anosike expressed optimism regarding the accreditation, highlighting the importance of the specialized services provided by NiMet for the Nigerian economy.
He emphasised the significance of addressing the current skills shortage in the sector and aligning with the Aviation sector agenda of the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo, SAN.
“The services NiMet render for the benefit of the Nigerian economy are specialized in nature. Our sector is currently experiencing skills shortage in different areas. This is our own response to solving that problem. It is also in line with the Aviation sector agenda of Mr. Festus Keyamo, SAN, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development.
“Development of human capacity and ensuring strict compliance with safety regulations and continuous upward movement of Nigeria’s rating by ICAO are all parts of that agenda which NiMet is working hard at contributing to,” Prof. Anosike explained.
The NBTE’s forthcoming decision on the accreditation of these programs is highly anticipated, as it will play a crucial role in advancing NiMet’s educational and training capabilities in Meteorology and Climate Change Sciences.
