NCAA, NSIB Launch SMS Pro Platform to Strengthen Aviation Safety Oversight in Nigeria
The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), in collaboration with the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB), has inaugurated the Safety Management System (SMS) Pro platform as part of efforts to strengthen aviation safety oversight and improve regulatory compliance across Nigeria’s aviation sector.
The newly launched system, known as SMS Pro, is a centralised safety data management platform designed to address gaps identified during previous audits conducted by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
Among the concerns raised during those audits were fragmented safety data systems and inconsistent reporting practices across various segments of the aviation industry.
By introducing SMS Pro, the aviation regulator aims to significantly improve hazard reporting, safety data analysis, and regulatory compliance within the sector, particularly as Nigeria prepares for the ICAO validation mission scheduled for April 2026.
The inauguration ceremony took place on March 16, 2026, at the corporate headquarters of the NCAA, where stakeholders gathered to witness the unveiling of what officials described as a vital technological advancement in aviation safety management.
Speaking during the event, the Director-General of Civil Aviation, Chris Najomo, described the SMS Pro platform as a critical tool for strengthening Nigeria’s aviation safety oversight architecture.
According to him, the system will enhance the country’s capacity to collect real-time safety data, manage occurrences, and conduct comprehensive trend analyses that will help identify emerging safety risks before they escalate into major incidents.
Najomo explained that the adoption of the platform aligns with global safety standards outlined in ICAO’s Annex 19 framework, which requires aviation authorities to implement robust Safety Management Systems that ensure proactive monitoring and management of safety risks.
He emphasised that the system would improve the accuracy, accessibility, and timeliness of safety information available to regulators and aviation operators alike.
“With the deployment of SMS Pro, the Authority will be better equipped to detect safety trends, manage occurrences efficiently, and respond promptly to safety concerns across the aviation ecosystem,” Najomo said.
The DGCA also stressed the urgency of ensuring full operational deployment of the system ahead of the upcoming ICAO validation mission in 2026, noting that Nigeria must demonstrate a strong and integrated safety oversight framework that meets international benchmarks.
Industry observers view the initiative as a major step toward strengthening Nigeria’s aviation safety culture and ensuring that data-driven decision-making becomes central to regulatory oversight.
Officials explained that the SMS Pro platform will not be limited to the regulatory authority alone. Rather, it is expected to be deployed across the aviation industry to ensure a unified and harmonised safety reporting structure.
The system will eventually cover airlines, airports, aircraft maintenance organisations, aviation training institutions, and air navigation service providers. By integrating safety data from these various stakeholders, regulators will be able to monitor safety performance across the industry more effectively.
Experts believe that such a centralised safety reporting and analysis system will promote transparency, improve accountability, and support proactive safety management within Nigeria’s aviation sector.
The inauguration of SMS Pro therefore marks a significant milestone in Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to modernise aviation safety oversight through the adoption of advanced digital tools.
As the aviation industry continues to expand and evolve, authorities say the new system will play a crucial role in ensuring that Nigeria maintains high safety standards while aligning its regulatory framework with global best practices.
