NCAA to Enhance Public Service with Emotional Intelligence Training for Personnel
In a strategic move aimed at improving the public interaction skills of its key personnel, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has announced plans to launch emotional intelligence capacity training.
This initiative is designed to equip employees with the necessary skills to manage the public effectively through emotional intelligence, ensuring smoother operations and enhanced passenger safety.
Speaking during a courtesy visit by a delegation from the Global Transport Policy in Lagos, Acting Director-General of Civil Aviation, Captain Chris Najomo, underscored the importance of emotional regulation in fostering effective teamwork within the aviation sector.
He stated that trust and collaboration are crucial to ensuring smooth operations, adding that emotional intelligence plays a key role in maintaining these working relationships.
“The capacity for emotional regulation is crucial for effective teamwork in the aviation industry,” Najomo said. “Good working relationships built on trust and collaboration are fundamental for the safety of passengers.”
Captain Najomo, represented by Barrister Bukola Teriba, the Lagos Regional Manager of NCAA, explained that the training would focus on developing competencies in both intrapersonal and interpersonal dimensions of emotional intelligence.
The programme will cover areas such as emotional self-awareness, emotional self-regulation, providing feedback with empathy, and asserting authority in a calm and professional manner.
“The NCAA will continue to equip its personnel with essential emotional intelligence skills,” Teriba affirmed.
“This will enable them to handle emotional regulation in high-pressure situations, demonstrate assertiveness during conflict scenarios, and consider other perspectives when negotiating agreements,” he added.
Teriba also highlighted that, as the apex regulatory body in Nigeria’s aviation sector, the NCAA recognises the need to stay ahead in its role.
By investing in emotional intelligence training, the agency aims to enhance the quality of its human interactions, leading to improved service delivery and a more positive experience for travellers.
As part of the event, Dr. Segun Musa, Managing Director and Chief Consultant of Global Transport Policy, presented an award to Captain Najomo, acknowledging the significant reforms he has implemented since assuming office.
Musa noted that the emotional intelligence training programme is part of Global Transport Policy’s Corporate Social Responsibility initiative, aimed at giving back to the aviation industry.
“The award is a testament to Captain Najomo’s commitment to excellence and his tireless efforts to drive positive change in the aviation sector,” Musa remarked.
The NCAA’s upcoming training series is expected to enhance the authority’s capacity to manage the complexities of human interactions in the aviation industry, positioning it for improved service delivery and operational efficiency.
