The Acting Director-General of the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Captain Chris Najomo, has called on airline operators to prioritise efficiency and accountability in handling flight disruptions.

Speaking during a crucial stakeholder meeting, Captain Najomo addressed key challenges plaguing the Nigerian aviation sector, including frequent flight delays, cancellations, and the violation of passenger refund timelines.

The meeting, attended by the Managing Directors of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), airline operators, and representatives from ground handling companies such as SAHCO and NAHCO, was convened to discuss sustainable solutions to these recurring issues.

Captain Najomo highlighted the extent of the problem, revealing that in September 2024 alone, domestic airlines operated 5,291 flights, of which 2,434 experienced delays, while 79 were cancelled.

The situation worsened in October 2024, with 5,513 flights operated, 2,791 delays, and 111 cancellations recorded.

“These disruptions not only disrupt passengers’ plans but also erode trust in our aviation industry and undermine national development,” he noted.

The NCAA boss emphasised the need for airlines to adhere to the Nigeria Civil Aviation (Consumer Protection) Regulations, 2023.

According to him, these regulations mandate that passengers must be promptly informed of schedule changes, delays, or cancellations.

Also, adequate care, including refreshments, accommodation, and alternative travel arrangements, must be provided for extended delays.

In case of unwarranted disruptions, refunds or compensations must be issued where applicable.

“Non-compliance with these regulations will not be tolerated,” Captain Najomo warned, adding that the NCAA would impose sanctions on airlines that fail to meet their obligations.

As Nigeria enters the harmattan season, Captain Najomo acknowledged that poor weather conditions are likely to affect flight operations. However, he stressed that operational challenges should not come at the expense of passengers.

“We urge airlines to invest in robust systems to minimise avoidable delays, ensure transparency in communication, and strengthen contingency plans for emergencies,” he said.

The Acting DG reaffirmed the NCAA’s commitment to working with airlines to address the root causes of flight disruptions.

He noted that over the past year, the authority has conducted awareness and training sessions for airline operators and travel agents to ensure compliance with passenger rights regulations.

While urging airlines to prioritise service delivery, Captain Najomo also reminded passengers of their responsibilities, cautioning against unruly behaviour.

In his closing remarks, Captain Najomo called for a collective effort to restore confidence in Nigeria’s aviation sector.

“A thriving aviation sector is one that puts passengers first,” he stated. “As we approach the new year, the NCAA will continue to monitor and enforce standards to safeguard the integrity of our industry. Together, let us restore pride in Nigeria’s air transport system.”

The meeting ended on a note of optimism, with stakeholders pledging to collaborate towards enhancing operational efficiency and improving passenger experience.
