NCS Hits Milestone with Pilot Launch of Electronic Currency Declaration Form at Abuja Airport

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has announced a major leap in its digital transformation efforts with the successful pilot deployment of the Electronic Currency Declaration Form (e-CDF) at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.

This development marks a pivotal step in the Service’s commitment to modernising border control mechanisms and promoting transparency in financial disclosures by travellers.

The pilot phase, which began on 9th April 2025, ran smoothly without any operational hitches, and demonstrated the system’s effectiveness in electronically capturing both inbound and outbound currency declarations.

According to a statement signed by Abdullahi Maiwada, Assistant Comptroller of Customs and National Public Relations Officer for Comptroller-General of Customs, a total of 69 currency declaration transactions were processed during the trial period.

Outbound declarations formed the bulk of the submissions, accounting for 51 transactions with a combined declared sum of $1,200,281.22. Inbound declarations totalled 18, with a declared value of $177,786.88.

The e-CDF platform was specifically designed in alignment with global standards on anti-money laundering (AML) and counter-financing of terrorism (CFT).

It provides real-time data that enhances intelligence gathering and facilitates inter-agency collaboration in financial surveillance and security.

Speaking on the significance of the project, the CGC Bashir Adewale Adeniyi MFR, reaffirmed the Service’s dedication to leveraging technology to improve regulatory compliance, promote seamless legitimate travel and trade, and uphold the integrity of Nigeria’s borders.

“The successful rollout of the e-CDF system in Abuja is a clear demonstration of our resolve to modernise Customs operations. We are confident that the system will play a vital role in safeguarding the nation against illicit financial flows and other transnational threats,” he said.

Buoyed by the promising outcomes of the Abuja pilot, the NCS revealed that plans are already underway to extend the e-CDF system to other international airports and border posts across the country.

This strategic deployment represents another forward-thinking stride by the NCS in adopting digital innovations to boost Nigeria’s border security infrastructure and foster a culture of transparency and accountability.
