Netherlands joins military coalition to equip Ukraine with advanced drone technology
In a strategic move aimed at bolstering Ukraine’s defensive capabilities against Russia, the Netherlands has announced its participation in a military coalition alongside Britain and other allies.
This coalition will supply Ukraine with cutting-edge drone technology, enhancing its offensive capabilities in the ongoing conflict, stated Dutch Defence Minister Kasja Ollongren.
According to Reuters, the Dutch pledge adds to the substantial support already provided to Kyiv, including F-16 fighter jets, artillery, ammunition, and air defense systems.
Minister Ollongren acknowledged potential additional costs, noting that the Netherlands had already earmarked 2 billion euros for 2024.
Speaking ahead of NATO defense minister meetings in Brussels, Ollongren emphasised the critical role of drones in modern warfare and highlighted the importance of collaboration.
She stressed the necessity of increasing production and leveraging the latest technology to meet Ukraine’s evolving needs.
The coalition, which includes Latvia and other countries, aims to consolidate efforts in providing Ukraine with essential resources. This move aligns with Ukraine’s strategy of manufacturing thousands of long-range drones capable of deep strikes into Russia by 2024.
Both Britain and the Netherlands had previously assisted Ukraine in developing its drone fleet. However, Ollongren noted that the formation of this coalition marks a new phase of coordinated support, enabling a swift response to Ukraine’s changing wartime tactics.
The Netherlands intends to contribute high-tech expertise from the commercial sector to the coalition.
However, specific technical and financial details were not disclosed by Minister Ollongren.
