Nigeria Customs Investigates Viral Video Incident Involving Officer, Clearing Agents at Tincan Port

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has initiated an investigation following the circulation of two contrasting videos on social media, which involve one of its officers and clearing agents at Car Park C Terminal within the Tincan Island Port Area Command.

The first video depicts a scenario where the officer appears to face embarrassment and hostility from clearing agents, while the second presents a vastly different scene of the same officer receiving a warm reception from the same group.

In response, the NCS in a statement signed by Abdullahi Maiwada, Chief Superintendent of Customs and National Public Relations Officer for the Comptroller-General of Customs, reaffirmed its commitment to addressing the incidents with utmost seriousness.

As part of standard protocol, the Customs Police Unit has been tasked with a thorough review of the videos. This process involves collecting statements from the officer involved and consulting relevant stakeholders associated with the incidents, aiming to ensure a fair and comprehensive inquiry.

Underlining the agency’s adherence to the NCS Act 2023, particularly Section 30, the service stated that it is dedicated to maintaining transparency and accountability in all its operations.

The NCS warned that anyone found to have breached its regulations – whether clearing agents, customs officers, or any other involved parties – will face legal consequences, with measures enforced to deter similar actions in the future.

The Comptroller-General of Customs (CGC) Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, MFR, has assured the public, stakeholders, and the business community that all necessary actions will be taken in response to the investigation’s outcome.

He emphasised the importance of professionalism and mutual respect within the port environment, urging all involved to adhere to these principles to maintain a positive working atmosphere.

The NCS reiterated its dedication to fostering a safe and conducive environment that supports legitimate trade and commercial activities across all its formations.
