The Comptroller-General of Nigeria Customs Service, Adewale Adeniyi, has reiterated the Service’s commitment to promoting only deserving officers and men through a rigorous and just examination process.

During an inspection visit to one of the examination venues at SASCON, Maitama District, Abuja, CGC Adeniyi highlighted the significance of maintaining high standards in the ongoing 2024 promotion exercise.

Speaking on Monday, 19 August 2024, he assured that the process would mirror the integrity and fairness of previous exercises, which had earned widespread recognition.

“We are committed to applying the same rigorous standards as in the previous promotion exercise, which was widely recognised for its fairness. Our goal and standard remain to ensure that every deserving candidate is promoted on merit,” CGC Adeniyi stated.

He further emphasised the importance of transparency and security in the conduct of the exams, noting the comprehensive measures taken to prevent malpractice.

“In terms of transparency, we are ready to put in enough effort to ensure tight security in the venues and essentialise the arrangements.

“We’ve done enough to ensure that we build a lot of integrity into the process, thus, we want them to believe in the outcome of promotion exams,” he added.

The Comptroller-General also acknowledged the competitive nature of the current promotion cycle, particularly for the positions of Deputy Comptroller and Comptroller.

With limited vacancies available, CGC Adeniyi noted that this year’s promotion exercise would be especially challenging, but reiterated the Service’s commitment to promoting the most qualified officers.

In a bid to ensure inclusivity, CGC Adeniyi confirmed that technological provisions had been made for officers posted abroad, enabling them to participate in the examination simultaneously with their colleagues in Nigeria.

“We have a few candidates who are not in the country, and we have made significant efforts to apply some technological approach to engage them in the examination process at the same time with their colleagues in Nigeria, through the assistance of the National Intelligence Agency,” he explained.

Highlighting the importance of the promotion exercise, CGC Adeniyi described it as not only statutory but essential to maintaining the high standards of the NCS.

He assured that every eligible officer would be promoted based on their performance, stating, “Whoever is deemed to have done well can rest assured that their promotion will fairly be granted as it will be based on merit.”

The inspection visit and CGC Adeniyi’s remarks have further reinforced the NCS’s commitment to a fair and transparent promotion process, ensuring that the best candidates are elevated to positions of greater responsibility within the Service.
