Nigeria Customs Warns Travellers Against Misuse of U.S. Visas, Urges Compliance with Immigration Laws

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has issued a strong advisory to Nigerian travellers, urging them to strictly adhere to the terms and conditions of their U.S. visas.
This follows concerns raised by the Government of the United States of America regarding the misuse of entry visas by some Nigerian nationals.
In a press statement released on Monday, the NCS highlighted that activities inconsistent with the purpose of travel and visa classification could attract serious consequences, including visa revocation.
The agency stressed that U.S. immigration authorities conduct ongoing security vetting even after visa holders enter the United States.
“Visa holders should be aware that the scrutiny does not end at the point of entry. U.S. authorities continue to monitor the activities of visa holders, and any breach of immigration protocols, import/export regulations, or other legal provisions could lead to visa cancellation,” the statement read.
Additionally, the Customs Service reminded travellers to declare any cash in excess of $10,000 or its equivalent at ports of entry or exit. It also cautioned against carrying prohibited items in their baggage, warning that failure to comply could lead to penalties.
“Travellers must be responsible, law-abiding citizens both within and outside the country. Any individual found committing fraud or violating laws in any jurisdiction will be subject to prosecution under both U.S. and Nigerian laws,” the statement added.
The NCS further disclosed that it is collaborating with the U.S. Mission in Abuja to safeguard Nigeria’s standing and prevent the imposition of an expanded visa restriction regime, which could affect law-abiding citizens seeking to visit the U.S. for legitimate business or personal engagements.
The warning serves as a proactive measure to protect Nigeria’s international image and ensure that genuine travellers are not penalised for the actions of a few.
The statement was signed by Dr Abdullahi Maiwada, Assistant Comptroller of Customs and National Public Relations Officer, on behalf of the Comptroller-General of Customs.
