Nigeria has emerged victorious in the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) Security Audit Programme, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s aviation security standards.

The announcement came during the Audit Debrief held at the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) Headquarters in the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, on Friday.

Led by Callum Vine, the audit team lauded Nigeria’s performance, citing commendable achievements in key indicators.

Mr. Vine commended the country for its robust policies and agencies dedicated to airport security, emphasising the prompt rectification of identified deficiencies without any delay.

The audit, conducted under the Continuous Monitoring Approach (USAP-CMA), aims to enhance global aviation security by regularly assessing Member States’ compliance with aviation security standards outlined in Annex 17 — Security and Annex 9 — Facilitation.

Nigeria’s exemplary performance reflects its commitment to ensuring the highest levels of aviation security oversight.

During the debrief, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, the Managing Director/Chief Executive of the Federal Airports Authority (FAAN), expressed gratitude for the audit results, affirming FAAN’s dedication to utilising the findings as a roadmap for continuous improvement.

In a statement signed by Obiageli Orah, Director, Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, FAAN, Kuku urged stakeholders to collaborate closely, share best practices, and uphold the highest security standards across the Nigerian aviation sector.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace, Dr. Emmanuel Meribole, representing the Honourable Minister, along with the Acting Director-General of NCAA, Captain Chris Najomo, were among the dignitaries present at the debriefing.

Looking ahead, Nigeria anticipates receiving the full audit report from ICAO within 60 days, followed by a 30-day period for comments.

Subsequently, the country will develop and submit a comprehensive compliance plan to meet ICAO standards.

The successful outcome of the ICAO Security Audit Programme underscores Nigeria’s commitment to safeguarding its airspace and enhancing global aviation security.

As the nation continues its journey towards excellence in aviation, collaboration, vigilance, and adherence to best practices remain paramount.
