Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan, world sprints champion in the female category, has successfully secured a spot in the semi-finals of the 100-meter hurdles at the ongoing 2024 Olympics in Paris.
Demonstrating her prowess, Amusan dominated her heat in the early hours of today – Wednesday, clocking an impressive 12.49 seconds.
She was closely followed by America’s Alaysha Johnson, who finished in 12.61 seconds, and Jamaica’s Janeek Brown, who qualified with a time of 12.84 seconds.
Amusan, a strong contender for the gold medal, will face a formidable lineup in the semi-finals.
The competition includes Bahamas’ Devynne Charlton, USA’s Alaysha Johnson, world champion Danielle Williams, and the reigning Olympic champion, Jasmine Camacho-Quinn of Puerto Rico.
The semi-finals are set to take place on Friday, August 9, with the final scheduled for Saturday, August 10, the penultimate day of the athletics events.
At 27, Amusan has shown remarkable form leading up to the Olympics. In May, she recorded a season’s best and world-leading time of 12.40 seconds at the Jamaican Athletics Invitational in Kingston.
Earlier in the year, she twice broke the African indoor record for the 60m hurdles in January and February.
In March this year, Amusan claimed her third consecutive African Games title in Ghana, where she also anchored the women’s 4x100m relay team to gold in Accra.
She continued her winning streak at the African Championships in Cameroon three months later. This season, Amusan has competed in 17 events, including the 60m, 100m, 100m hurdles, and the 4x100m relay, showcasing her versatility and endurance.
As Amusan gears up for the semi-finals, her impressive track record and current form position her as a top favorite, with fans and analysts alike eagerly anticipating her performance.
Nigeria might just break the medal jinx at the Paris Olympics if Tobi clinches any of the three spots in the finals.
