Nigeria: NCAA suspends Mattini Airline’s permit, launches comprehensive audits following runway excursion at Ibadan airport

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has swiftly responded to a recent runway excursion incident involving a Challenger CL 601 aircraft operated by Mattini Airline Services Limited.

The incident occurred at Ibadan Airport today – Friday, the 26th of January, 2024, prompting the regulatory body to take immediate actions in the interest of safety and compliance.

The NCAA disclosed that Mattini Airline Services Limited, holding a valid Permit for Non-Commercial Flight (PNCF), found itself under scrutiny after the mishap.

The Authority confirmed that the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has commenced a safety investigation, as mandated by statutory provisions, to ascertain the details surrounding the occurrence.

Concurrently, the NCAA has initiated an economic inquiry into the operation of the Challenger CL 601 aircraft, specifically examining its adherence to the terms and conditions outlined in the PNCF’s Annexure.

This dual-pronged approach aims to thoroughly assess both safety and economic aspects related to the incident.

In accordance with Section 32 (4) of the Civil Aviation Act 2022, the NCAA has taken decisive action by suspending the PNCF of Mattini Airline Services Limited with immediate effect.

This suspension will remain in place until a thorough determination is made, ensuring that the airline has met all the conditions stipulated in its permit.

Not stopping at individual airline scrutiny, the NCAA said it has broadened its scope by initiating a comprehensive safety and economic audit of all private jet operations in Nigeria.

At a recent media engagement with the League of Airport and Aviation Correspondents in Lagos, Capt. Chris Najomo, Director-General of the Civil Aviation Authority, emphasised the agency’s commitment to implement a risk-based surveillance system, as a safety measure aimed at checking unscheduled jet operators.

This move underscores the regulatory body’s commitment to ensuring the highest standards of safety and compliance within the aviation industry.

Michael Achimugu, the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at the NCAA, signed the press statement, reiterating the authority’s commitment to the safety of the traveling public and the implementation of global best practices.
