Nigeria: NiMet calls for collaborative action in disaster risk reduction, climate change adaptation
The Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), Professor Charles Anosike, has emphasised the urgent need for collaboration among relevant agencies to tackle disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation.
Anosike made this call during a pivotal address at the ‘Technical Workshop On Sendai Framework Monitoring And Reporting’ held in Abuja on Wednesday – January 31, 2024,
The workshop, organised by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in conjunction with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the United Nations Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), provided a platform for Professor Anosike to underscore the challenges posed by disasters and the necessity for coordinated efforts in understanding and mitigating their impacts.
Highlighting the significance of partnerships and collaboration, Professor Anosike urged a collective strengthening of Nigeria’s resilience.
He stressed the role of NiMet in providing accurate and timely weather information, forecasting, and climate services, recognising the agency’s role in the nation’s disaster management.
“Disasters pose significant challenges to our nation, and we must work together to enhance our coordination mechanism with disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation for better understanding and communication of cost benefit.
“By fostering partnerships and collaboration, we can collectively strengthen Nigeria’s resilience and effectively mitigate the impacts of disasters,” said Anosike.
The NiMet DG concluded by advocating the utilisation of the Sendai Framework Monitor to develop data-driven strategies, fostering informed decision-making, resilient communities, and sustainable development.
