Nigeria’s natural gas producer, NLNG Limited has achieved a significant milestone in its Hospital Support Programme (HSP) by unveiling the renovated and expanded Accident and Emergency Unit at the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital (UUTH) in Uyo, Nigeria.

The commissioning event, held on Tuesday, witnessed the presence of notable figures, including the Executive Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Pastor Umo Eno, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Prince Enobong Uwah.

Dignitaries such as the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Hon. Ekperikpe Ekpo; Executive Vice President (Gas), Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Olalekan Ogunleye; Chief Technology Officer (NNPCL), Kunle Osobu; and UUTH’s Chief Medical Director, Prof. Emem Bassey, were also present at the event.

This initiative, part of NLNG’s commitment to improving healthcare nationwide, marked the seventh project under the HSP.

Launched in 2022, the program focuses on enhancing the healthcare delivery system across 12 Federal University Teaching Hospitals in Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones.

The renovated Accident and Emergency Unit at UUTH is part of the second phase of the program initiated in January 2023.

NLNG’s Managing Director and CEO, Dr. Philip Mshelbila, emphasised the collaborative efforts of the private and public sectors for the benefit of the people, highlighting NLNG’s commitment to health as a foundation for national development.

“NLNG is focused on the pursuit of interventions, initiatives or experiences that make life meaningful for Nigerians grounded upon the four pillars of education, economic empowerment, infrastructure and health.

“Yes, health. That is the basis for being here today. A healthy nation is the foundation for a wealthy nation, hence successes in other areas of development are anchored on sound health.

“It is indeed my belief that today’s commissioning of this renovated Accident and Emergency Unit opens new vistas for sustainable growth of Akwa Ibom state and indeed Nigeria,” he said.

Governor Umo Eno commended NLNG for selecting UUTH for the HSP project, expressing the government’s interest in partnering with corporate entities to develop public facilities and improve the wellbeing of the populace.

Minister Ekperikpe Ekpo stressed the transformative impact of the renovated unit, envisioning it as a place where lives will be restored and hopes rekindled in challenging moments.

The UUTH project includes comprehensive renovations and expansions, including theatre suites with a 2-bed recovery space, installation of oxygen piping, and modern medical equipment such as ECG, Diathermy and Anaesthesia machines.

The facility also features improved revenue collection offices, patient conveniences, roof replacement, and furniture provision.

Other enhancements to the hospital encompass window maintenance, automated doors for theatre suites, mechanical and electrical services, surface finishes, landscaping, and the installation of a 15KVA solar inverter, connecting the facility to the hospital’s water supply system.

The successful completion of this project reflects NLNG’s dedication to sustainable growth and healthcare advancement in Akwa Ibom state and Nigeria as a whole.
