Nigeria: NSIB to investigate runway excursion incident at Ibadan airport
The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has initiated a thorough investigation into a runway excursion incident involving a Challenger 601-3R aircraft bearing the Nationality and Registration Marks N580KR.
The incident unfolded at approximately 10:55 am local time on Friday, January 26, 2024.
The aircraft, operated by Mattini Air, was en-route from Abuja to Ibadan with 12 passengers and three crew members on board.
The unsettling incident occurred during the final approach to landing Runway 22 at Ibadan Airport when the aircraft overshot the runway.
Miraculously, all 12 passengers and three crew members were safely evacuated, preventing any fatalities.
Promptly responding to the situation, the NSIB said it has deployed a specialised Go Team to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the incident.
In a statement signed by its Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Mrs Bimbo Olawunmi Oladeji, the NSIB emphasised its openness to assistance from the public, stating, “We urge anyone with video clips, relevant evidence, or information pertaining to the incident to come forward and assist us in our investigation.”
The bureau added that while it is diligently working on unraveling the circumstances surrounding the overshooting incident, it is keen on maintaining the privacy of those involved.
It further appealed to the general public and the press to refrain from making assumptions about the cause of the incident until an official report is released.
The bureau assured the public that it will release a preliminary report as soon as possible, shedding light on the details of the incident and the steps taken to prevent future occurrences.
