Nigeria Strengthens Aviation Ties with Algeria, as Keyamo Receives Algerian Ambassador

Nigeria and Algeria have taken a significant step toward enhancing bilateral air transport connectivity, as the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, received the Algerian Ambassador to Nigeria, Mezoued Hosine, in Abuja.

Tunde Moshood, Special Adviser on Media and Communications to the Minister, disclosed that the courtesy visit focused on finalising arrangements for the commencement of a Bilateral Air Service Agreement (BASA) between both nations.

During the discussions, Ambassador Hosine reiterated Algeria’s keen interest in launching an air route linking Algiers, Abuja, and Douala, Cameroon.

He specifically sought the Minister’s intervention in fast-tracking the necessary approvals from the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) to ensure seamless operations by the proposed commencement date of 6 April 2024.

Minister Keyamo welcomed the initiative, applauding Algeria’s commitment to strengthening aviation ties with Nigeria.

He assured the visiting envoy that the Ministry would expedite all necessary processes to facilitate the agreement’s smooth implementation.

“This development aligns with our broader vision to enhance Nigeria’s aviation connectivity with key international destinations,” the Minister stated. “We will work closely with relevant agencies, particularly the NCAA, to ensure all required formalities are completed as swiftly as possible.

“This is an opportunity we’ve been waiting for. If we have to go to Cameroon – a neighbouring country less than an hour’s flight away – we currently have to fly to Togo first, possibly sleep over before reaching Cameroon. This new route is a welcome development.”

The Algeria-Abuja-Douala route is expected to bolster trade, tourism, and economic collaboration between Nigeria, Algeria, and the broader African region.

It also signifies a strengthening of diplomatic ties between the two nations, reinforcing Nigeria’s strategic role as a key aviation hub on the continent.

The Minister reaffirmed Nigeria’s readiness to support the initiative, underscoring the government’s dedication to improving air travel accessibility and fostering greater cooperation in the aviation sector.
