The significant appointment was made during the 27th meeting of the AFI Plan Steering Committee, part of the 9th AFI Aviation Week held in Libreville, Gabon.
Established by ICAO in 2007, the AFI Plan aims to enhance aviation safety across Africa through a sustainable and structured approach.
The plan promotes the active participation of all aviation sector stakeholders, including States, Regional Safety Oversight Organizations (RSOOs), and Regional Accident Investigation Agencies (RAIOs).
The broad objective of the AFI Plan is to improve aviation safety in Africa by providing a coordinated framework involving all relevant stakeholders.
Specific objectives of the AFI Plan include assisting States in strengthening their safety oversight and management capacity, inncreasing safety oversight implementation across the region, certifying aerodromes used for international operations.
Other objectives include implementing State safety programs, supporting regional safety and investigation organisations to ensure effective and sustainable functioning, and assisting long-term infrastructure planning in States, particularly infrastructure development.
Engr. Ben Tukur’s election as Chairperson underscores Nigeria’s commitment to improving aviation safety standards in Africa.
His leadership is expected to drive the AFI Plan’s objectives forward, fostering a safer and more efficient aviation environment across the continent.
