NiMet, Adamawa State University Partner to Enhance Climate Resilience, Flood Preparedness in North-East Nigeria

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and Adamawa State University (ADSU), Mubi, have agreed to collaborate on meteorological research, climate data generation, and disaster preparedness, a move aimed at strengthening climate resilience and enhancing early warning systems in flood-prone areas of Nigeria’s North-East.
The partnership was solidified during a courtesy visit by the Vice-Chancellor of ADSU, Professor Augustine Clement, to the NiMet Headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday, 29th July 2025.
Welcoming the delegation, the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of NiMet, Professor Charles Anosike, who also serves as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative with the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), underscored the urgent need for climate-smart solutions in vulnerable regions like Adamawa State.
Professor Anosike highlighted the strategic location of the university within an agriculturally rich corridor and its proximity to major hydrological infrastructure such as the Kiri Dam.
He noted that these characteristics make the institution an ideal partner in advancing meteorological observation and research.
“The geographical positioning of Adamawa State University—within an agrarian corridor and in close proximity to critical hydrological infrastructure – presents a strategic opportunity for collaboration in meteorological observation, climate research, downscaling of seasonal climate prediction and capacity-building initiatives,” Anosike stated.
He expressed NiMet’s commitment to supporting the university through the establishment of a functional weather station, joint academic programmes, and collaborative research projects.
He also announced that the Agency intends to formalise the relationship through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), detailing the roles and responsibilities of both parties, especially in terms of station maintenance, data generation, and timely data transmission.
“It is vital that the university actively engages its surrounding communities to leverage the benefits of this partnership fully,” he added.
In his remarks, Professor Augustine Clement praised NiMet for its leading role in national development through meteorological innovation and early warning dissemination.
He reaffirmed the university’s dedication to pursuing environmentally sustainable research that addresses the specific needs of local communities, especially those vulnerable to climate-induced disasters like flooding.
The planned collaboration aligns with national efforts to improve climate adaptation strategies and increase the effectiveness of early warning systems in Nigeria, particularly in states prone to extreme weather events.
It also reinforces NiMet’s role as a central pillar in promoting data-driven decision-making for sustainable development.
