The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has entered into a strategic partnership with Adamawa State University through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at advancing climate research and enhancing the dissemination of timely early warnings.

The collaboration is expected to provide real-time weather alerts, seasonal forecasts, and tailored climate information for farmers and local communities across Adamawa State.

It also seeks to establish specialised training programmes for students and practitioners, while supporting joint research publications that focus on the unique climate challenges facing the region.

Speaking during the signing, NiMet’s Director-General and Chief Executive Officer, Professor Charles Anosike, stressed the importance of strong ties between the agency and tertiary institutions.

He noted that such partnerships are vital for research-driven innovations and the effective spread of early warnings in line with the United Nations’ Early Warning for All 2027 initiative.

“Strengthening research collaboration with universities like Adamawa State University is essential in improving food security, protecting lives and property, and building resilience against extreme weather events,” Professor Anosike said.

He identified drought and flood monitoring, climate data analysis, and community-based disaster preparedness as key focus areas of the agreement.

On his part, the Vice-Chancellor of Adamawa State University, Professor Augustine Clement, pledged the institution’s full commitment to the partnership.

He outlined plans to co-develop educational workshops, create research internship opportunities in climatology, and support community outreach initiatives that translate scientific findings into practical solutions for both the public and policymakers.

The MoU highlights the growing significance of academia–agency collaboration in Nigeria’s fight against climate change.

By pooling expertise and resources, NiMet and Adamawa State University aim to bolster the country’s ability to anticipate, respond to, and mitigate the impacts of extreme weather, while empowering the next generation of climate scientists and practitioners.
