NiMet clinches ‘Most Improved Aviation Agency’ at 2022 ATQ Awards

…as Matazu wins CEO of the Year

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has been awarded the ‘Most Improved Aviation Agency’ by the Air Transport Quarterly (magazine) Awards.

The agency clinched a double, as its Director-General, Prof. Mansur Bako Matazu won the ‘CEO of the Year’ award on the same platform, in recognition of his innovative ideas and astute decisions that paved way for the agency to flourish in leaps and bounds.

At the awards ceremony held in Lagos on Thursday, December 15, the organisers of the annual event noted that one of the things Matazu improved within two years at the helm of the agency, which earned him such recognition, is prompt dissemination of weather forecasts.

Receiving the awards, Matazu attributed the critical role of journalists and media platforms to his achievements, noting that no meaningful assessment of progress and performance evaluation would take place without accurate and timely reportage of activities both internally and externally.

According to the NiMet DG, he has invested in infrastructure upgrades, personnel training and welfare in order to create a working system which has translated into “world-class quality service delivery.”

“Let me start by acknowledging the critical role of the media/journalist in strategic development all over the World and indeed in Nigeria. There can be no meaningful assessment of progress and performance evaluation without accurate and timely reportage of activities both internally and externally.

“Similarly, quality reporting attracts investments that are critical to growth and development. In the Aviation Industry, good and quality reporting with patriotism is a catalyst for Industry Growth by attracting tourists and travelling public to our airports. Hence, the Special Place of Air Transport Quarterly Magazine.

“In my career journey, up to the level of Professorship and the Chief Executive of NiMet, investing in the System under which I have had the privilege of working; and positively impacting the lives of people I have been able to meet along the way have been part of my personal development.

“I have also maintained these since I assumed office as the Director General/CEO of NiMet. I strongly believe that a good working environment (i.e., System) and a motivated workforce (i.e., Lives) will lead to Quality Service delivery that is not only Visible but Relevant and World Class.

“At Nigerian Meteorological Agency, we strongly believe in training and re-training our personnel to ensure a competent and highly skilled workforce. This is of course in addition to numerous investments in infrastructure development; not only in aviation but also in other areas of meteorological application such as agriculture and marine among others,” said Matazu.

He added that the agency has consistently maintained a quality management system in capacity building and other critical areas within its purview, and this has been recognized by the International Standardisation Organisation (ISO).

“Since 2013, we have maintained Quality Management System ISO certification beginning from ISO 9001:2008 to the current ISO 9001:2015. Similarly in capacity building, we have maintained ISO 29990:2010.

“On this note, therefore, I wish to gladly accept this Award of the ATQ CEO of the Year 2022 and the Most Improved Aviation Agency of the Year 2022,” he said.
