NiMet DG Anosike Clinches 2026 Nigerian Educational Excellence Award

The Director General and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency, Prof. Charles Anosike, has been honoured with the 2026 Nigerian Educational Excellence Award in recognition of his leadership and contributions towards advancing education through meteorology-based studies and training programmes in Nigeria and across the West African sub-region.

The award was presented on Monday, May 11, 2026, during a ceremony held at the Faculty of Education of Federal University Oye-Ekiti.

Prof. Anosike, who was represented at the event by the Director of Weather Forecasting Services at NiMet, Prof. Vincent Weli, expressed appreciation to the organisers for the recognition, describing the award as a reflection of the agency’s commitment to knowledge advancement and innovation.

Accompanied by the Director of Legal Services, Barrister Shola Gabriel, and the Special Assistant on General Services to the Director General, Dr. Emmanuel Uket, Prof. Weli received the award on behalf of the NiMet boss.

In his remarks, Anosike stated that although NiMet is widely known for weather forecasting and climate services, the agency has also played a significant role in supporting educational development across Nigeria.

“As the Director General and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency, I am privileged to lead an organisation whose impact stretches beyond weather forecasting into the heart of our nation’s educational development,” he said.

According to him, NiMet has consistently partnered with educational institutions by providing curriculum support, practical meteorological training, and access to climate data to aid research, learning, and sustainable development initiatives.

He noted that the agency’s interventions, including annual climate workshops and the integration of meteorological modules into university programmes, have helped strengthen the connection between science and society.

Anosike, who also serves as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the World Meteorological Organization, reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to educational excellence, pledging continued investment in the training of future meteorologists, researchers, and innovators.

“Today’s recognition inspires us to deepen these partnerships and ensure that meteorological knowledge remains a cornerstone of Nigeria’s educational advancement,” he stated.

Speaking earlier at the ceremony, Prof. Weli said the honour reflected Prof. Anosike’s dedication to transforming meteorological science into a practical educational tool that benefits universities, classrooms, researchers, and young professionals across the country.

He explained that under Anosike’s leadership, NiMet has expanded collaborations with tertiary institutions to integrate operational weather data into courses in meteorology, geography, environmental science, and agriculture.

Weli added that the agency had prioritised the training of young meteorologists and technicians in modern forecasting systems, data analysis, and impact-based warning mechanisms to prepare them for emerging climate realities.

According to him, Anosike’s commitment to open data access and effective public communication has also made NiMet’s Seasonal Climate Prediction and daily Weather Outlook valuable teaching and research tools for lecturers, students, and researchers studying climate dynamics within the Nigerian environment.

“This award recognises more than technical innovation; it recognises Prof. Anosike’s belief that education is the bridge between scientific knowledge and national resilience,” Weli said.

He further noted that by embedding training, mentorship, and research collaboration into the core operations of NiMet, the agency under Anosike’s leadership has demonstrated that a public institution can successfully combine service delivery with educational development.
