NiMet forges partnership with FUPRE for weather observation, research, and e-Learning
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has entered into a strategic partnership with the Federal University of Petroleum Resources Effurun (FUPRE) to enhance weather observation, research, and e-learning initiatives.
In a statement, the agency said the collaboration was formalised through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Thursday – May 16, 2024, signifying a shared commitment to advancing meteorological services and education.
NiMet’s Director-General and CEO, Professor Charles Anosike, emphasised the significance of the partnership at the MoU signing ceremony, highlighting the need for oil companies operating weather stations along Nigeria’s shores to register these stations with NiMet, as mandated by the new NiMet Act.
Professor Anosike expressed optimism that the collaboration with FUPRE would facilitate compliance and improve climate risk data collection, ultimately positioning NiMet as a leader in providing climate risk information to the oil and gas sector.
“I would like the Federal University of Petroleum Resources Effurun (FUPRE) to take advantage of NiMet’s e-learning services that will soon be unveiled. It would actually fast-track the introduction of joint courses between FUPRE and NiMet”, Anosike stated.
Professor Akpofure Rim-Rukeh, Vice Chancellor of FUPRE, affirmed the university’s commitment to this partnership, anticipating NiMet’s support in establishing observatory stations and training personnel in weather data generation.
He noted that such efforts would bolster research, academic publications, and overall institutional impact.
According to the agency, the MoU outlines a comprehensive framework for collaboration, including the installation of NiMet’s Resident Observatory Station (ROS) at FUPRE.
This facility, according to NiMet, will enhance meteorological activities and research within the university.
The ceremony was attended by key officials, including NiMet’s Director of Legal Services, Barr. Shola Gabriel, and other agency staff.
Professor Rim-Rukeh signed on behalf of FUPRE, while Professor Anosike signed on behalf of NiMet, marking the beginning of a promising partnership aimed at advancing meteorological science and education in Nigeria.
