NiMet, Landmark University Sign MoU to Boost Climate Research, Environmental Education

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has formalised a new partnership with Landmark University through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) designed to advance meteorological research, strengthen climate education, and enhance national resilience to environmental challenges.
Signed on Thursday, the agreement establishes a collaborative framework that will expand the generation, analysis, and application of climate data in support of sustainable development across Nigeria.
It also sets the stage for enriched academic programmes that integrate climate science into university curricula, fostering a new generation of climate-focused researchers and professionals.
Speaking at the event, the Director-General/CEO of NiMet, Prof. Charles Anosike, described the partnership as a significant step towards fulfilling the agency’s mandate of improving data-driven forecasting and early warning systems.
He stated that the collaboration will support research in critical areas, including drought monitoring, flood analysis, agricultural planning, and climate variability assessments.

According to him, “This partnership aligns with our commitment to deepen scientific research, enhance our predictive capabilities, and strengthen Nigeria’s early warning systems. Through this collaboration, we hope to provide more accurate and timely climate information that supports national planning and safeguards livelihoods.”
Also commenting, the Pro-Chancellor of Landmark University, Dr Olumuyiwa Oyeniyi, reaffirmed the institution’s dedication to fostering solutions-oriented research and innovation.
He noted that the university is poised to contribute meaningfully through joint research projects, staff exchange programmes, and community outreach initiatives aimed at transforming scientific knowledge into practical benefits for farmers, policymakers, and local communities.
He said the university would provide an enabling environment for robust academic engagement and interdisciplinary collaboration, adding that the partnership underscores the role of universities in driving national development.

The MoU highlights the growing importance of synergy between government institutions and academia in tackling the impacts of climate change.
By leveraging NiMet’s technical expertise and Landmark University’s research capabilities, the collaboration aims to create a stronger national framework for climate monitoring, education, and innovation – ultimately contributing to a more climate-resilient Nigeria.
