The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has launched its university network programme, aimed at providing timely weather and climate warnings to farmers in proximity to universities.

The Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of NiMet, Professor Charles Anosike, emphasised the significance of this initiative during the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between NiMet and Greenfield University in Kaduna State on Monday, March 5th, 2024.

Professor Anosike underscored the importance of fulfilling the obligations outlined in the MoU, stating that NiMet is committed to leveraging various avenues to reach Nigerian farmers and mitigate the impacts of weather-related disasters.

“NiMet is fully committed to assisting farmers with weather information to ensure food security. This is a key component of the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s government,” Professor Anosike affirmed.

The MoU entails data sharing, staff development, and the establishment of an automatic weather observatory within Greenfield University.

According to Anosike, this observatory will be integrated into NiMet’s network of weather stations, transmitting data for analysis to benefit Nigerians and critical sectors.

The Vice Chancellor of Greenfield University, Professor John Aiyedogbon, praised NiMet’s efforts and highlighted the significance of the 2024 Seasonal Climate Prediction (SCP) in aiding preparedness across sectors, particularly in agriculture.

“We will also leverage on the university’s network of collaborations and influence to support the development of meteorology within the university’s area of influence,” Professor Aiyedogbon affirmed.

The MoU signing ceremony was attended by NiMet’s Director of Legal Services, Barrister Shola Gabriel, and other agency staff.

Prof. Aiyedogbon signed the MoU on behalf of Greenfield University, while Prof. Charles Anosike represented NiMet.

With this collaborative effort, NiMet and Greenfield University aim to foster resilience against climate-related challenges and promote sustainable agricultural practices for the benefit of Nigeria’s farming communities.
