NiMet partners with TVC to enhance weather, climate information dissemination
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has entered into a partnership with TV Continental (TVC) aimed at improving the dissemination of weather and climate information in the country.
In a statement, NiMet said this collaboration was formalised through the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) at NiMet’s headquarters in Abuja today – Friday, May 17, 2024.
During the MoU signing ceremony, Professor Charles Anosike, the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of NiMet, emphasised the importance of this partnership, highlighting the potential benefits to the public and various sectors of the Nigerian economy, including aviation, agriculture, marine, oil and gas, and construction.
“Accurate weather and climate information shared with the public and operators in critical sectors helps in making climate-resilient decisions,” stated Professor Anosike. He pointed out that using media channels like TVC will enhance the reach and impact of NiMet’s forecasts.
Professor Anosike also addressed common misconceptions about NiMet’s role, noting that the agency’s mandate extends beyond weather forecasting to include communicating the impacts of these forecasts to stakeholders such as farmers.
The partnership with TVC, according to Anosike, is seen as a strategic move to amplify this communication.
The partnership with TVC is coming at the right time as we are about to launch our new generation TV weather broadcast graphics alongside other content.
“The MOU with TVC will help us to reach wider audiences through our daily weather forecasts and other climate-related content,” Anosike added.
He also mentioned that NiMet is poised to launch new generation TV weather broadcast graphics, which will be supported by this partnership.
He disclosed further that NiMet is currently disseminating the 2024 seasonal climate prediction (SCP) to farmers and other stakeholders nationwide. The collaboration with TVC is expected to facilitate broader broadcast of these critical predictions.
“Presently, NiMet is disseminating the report of the 2024 seasonal climate prediction (SCP) to farmers and other stakeholders nationwide. We need TVC and other media organizations to help broadcast these to the public”.
Victoria Ajayi, CEO of TVC, expressed her enthusiasm for the partnership, praising NiMet’s initiatives under Professor Anosike’s leadership.
She assured NiMet of TVC’s support in effectively communicating weather and climate information to the public.
“TVC will support NiMet to communicate its activities widely. We assure NiMet of our support and want people to always see TVC as the go-to media organization for first-hand weather and climate information,” Ajayi affirmed.
The MOU signing was attended by key officials from both organisations. NiMet’s delegation included Prof. Vincent Weli (Weather Forecast Services), Barr. Shola Gabriel (Legal Services), Dr. Nasiru Sani (Human Resources and Administration), and Mrs. Glory Onyegbule (Applied Meteorological Services).
Representing TVC were Babajide Kolade-Otitoju (Group Controller, Current and Public Affairs), Stella Din (Director News), and Emeka Chukwuma (Head Commercial).
