NiMet Sets Stage for 2025 Seasonal Climate Prediction Unveiling
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has announced the commencement of preparations for the public unveiling of its 2025 Seasonal Climate Prediction (SCP), slated for the first quarter of next year.
The SCP serves as a critical tool, providing forecasts on the seasonal climate outlook to mitigate climate risks, support adaptation strategies, and ensure sustainable food security.
Recognised as an early warning mechanism, it aligns with the United Nations’ Early Warning for All (EW4ALL) initiative, spearheaded by the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO).
The forecast, a result of extensive and meticulous scientific processes, leverages global and regional models alongside atmospheric drivers with strong teleconnections to Nigeria’s climate region.
The SCP document is designed to inform policy making, planning, and decision-making across various sectors in the private and public domains.
Key beneficiaries of this climate outlook include operators in weather-sensitive industries such as agriculture, aviation, construction, water resources, health, trade, and tourism.
By providing reliable information, the SCP aims to enhance the resilience of individuals, businesses, and the nation at large.
In preparation for the 2025 SCP, NiMet recently inducted and trained new members of the Task Team responsible for developing the prediction.
The induction, held in Abuja, highlighted the agency’s commitment to maintaining professionalism and excellence in producing the SCP document.
Haruna Zakari, Task Team Coordinator and Technical Assistant to the Director-General/CEO of NiMet, Prof. Charles Anosike, underscored the significance of the team’s role.
“The DG/CEO of NiMet, Prof. Charles Anosike, believes that the carefully selected Task Team will demonstrate a high sense of professionalism by being committed and dedicated to delivering a noteworthy document within the projected timeline,” he said.
Zakari also stressed the importance of early warnings in bolstering Nigeria’s economic resilience and sustainability. Following the induction and training exercise, the new members will be fully integrated into the Task Team to ensure a seamless process in crafting the 2025 SCP draft document.
As the unveiling date approaches, NiMet reaffirms its dedication to equipping the nation with accurate and actionable climate information to mitigate risks and harness opportunities presented by seasonal variations.
