The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ogun State government to construct a weather station at the Ogun State Cargo Airport in Sagamu.
The MoU was signed earlier today – Monday, July 22, 2024, by Prof. Charles Anosike, the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of NiMet, and Engr. Gbenga Dairo, the Ogun State Commissioner for Transportation, who represented the state.
The signing ceremony was witnessed by Alhaji I.O. Saka, Permanent Secretary in the Bureau of Cabinet and Special Services, Ogun State government, and Barr. Shola Gabriel, Director of Legal Services, NiMet.
Prof. Anosike emphasised that the partnership aligns with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) protocols, which mandate member states to establish and maintain meteorological services through national meteorological offices.
He highlighted the importance of this collaboration for ensuring the safety, economy, and efficiency of flights, in accordance with ICAO and the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) standards.
“His Excellency, Prince Adedapo Abiodun, MFR, is serious about the strategic relationship with NiMet. He personally called as this MoU signing was going on. I want to assure him and the people of Ogun State of our full support,” Prof. Anosike stated.
Engr. Dairo commended Prof. Anosike and the NiMet team for their professionalism throughout the process leading to the MoU signing.
He noted that the establishment of the weather station is a crucial step toward enhancing aviation safety and efficiency in Ogun State.
The new weather station at the Sagamu Cargo Airport is expected to play a pivotal role in providing accurate and timely meteorological information, thereby supporting both aviation operations and broader weather forecasting needs in the region.
This partnership marks a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to improve Nigeria’s meteorological infrastructure and services, ensuring that they meet international standards and contribute to the overall safety and efficiency of the aviation sector.
