The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and the Women Farmers Advancement Network (WOFAN) have taken a significant step towards mitigating the impact of climate disasters on Nigerian farmers, particularly women and youth.

At a strategic meeting held on Monday at NiMet’s headquarters in Abuja, the Director General and Chief Executive Officer of NiMet, Prof. Charles Anosike, commended WOFAN’s long-standing contributions to the agricultural sector.

“I commend WOFAN for the amazing work they have done over the years since 1993,” he stated. “With a network of close to 700,000 farmers and various community-based agricultural projects, including training for agricultural extension workers, this partnership is one of my most important achievements. It has the potential to significantly enhance agricultural yield in Nigeria.”

Prof. Anosike highlighted that the collaboration with WOFAN was timely, coming shortly after the public unveiling of NiMet’s 2025 Seasonal Climate Prediction in February.

He stressed the importance of ensuring that NiMet’s meteorological products and climate information reach the farmers who rely on them for decision-making.

“We are highly dependent on rain-fed agriculture in Nigeria. Our work at NiMet won’t be complete if our information does not reach farmers and other end users.

Through this partnership, we can guide farmers ahead of the rainy season, helping them to reduce damages, manage pests, prevent illnesses, and optimise their yield,” he said.

On her part, Hajia Salamatu Garba, founder of WOFAN, lauded NiMet’s consistency in providing weather and climate information to the public.

She acknowledged the critical role NiMet’s data plays in climate-smart agricultural strategies.

“We have always received NiMet data from other sources, but with this partnership, we will have more direct access,” Hajia Garba said.

The meeting concluded with both organisations agreeing to formalise their partnership through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to guide future collaborations.

The partnership between NiMet and WOFAN is expected to enhance farmers’ preparedness for climate variability, ensuring better resilience against weather-related challenges.
