The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has successfully concluded a multimodal transport accident investigation training in the UK, a significant step towards bolstering transportation safety in Nigeria.

The training brought together participants from the Nigerian Army, Navy, and Air Force, along with NSIB officials, reflecting the Bureau’s ongoing commitment to enhancing safety standards across various transportation sectors.

This initiative is in line with the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr Festus Keyamo’s broader agenda for advancing the aviation and transport industries in Nigeria.

In a statement signed by Mrs Bimbo Olawumi Oladeji, Director of Public Affairs and Family Assistance, the Bureau said the intensive programme featured global experts from prestigious institutions, including Cranfield University and Buckinghamshire New University in the United Kingdom.

Local expertise was also drawn from the Institute of Transport Technology (NITT) and other notable organisations within Nigeria.

Designed to equip both NSIB personnel and military investigators with cutting-edge skills, the training incorporated global best practices essential for transport investigation in Nigeria’s evolving infrastructure.

This training marks a significant milestone for NSIB as it continues its mission to deliver world-class transportation investigations.

By enhancing the Bureau’s capability to handle complex investigations, it aims to improve safety standards and reduce future transport-related incidents.

The integration of military personnel alongside NSIB’s junior and senior investigators has fostered a multidisciplinary approach, ensuring comprehensive knowledge transfer and cross-sectoral collaboration – critical elements for ensuring the safety of Nigeria’s rapidly expanding transport infrastructure.

Captain Alex Badeh Jr., Director General of NSIB, emphasised the importance of the initiative: “The goal of this programme is not only to improve our technical investigation skills but to ensure we have the capacity to address the increasing complexity of Nigeria’s transportation infrastructure.

By involving military institutions and incorporating international expertise, we’re building a safety culture that will benefit all Nigerians.”

The programme aligns closely with NSIB’s strategic objectives of enhancing investigative efficiency, maintaining transparency in safety reports, and proactively preventing future incidents through effective risk management recommendations.

These goals are in direct support of Mr Festus Keyamo’s vision for the aviation and transport sectors, which prioritises raising safety standards, building capacity, and modernising protocols to meet global benchmarks.

“The Honourable Minister’s vision is clear. He is focused on creating a safer, more efficient aviation industry, and through programmes like this, we are contributing to the realisation of that vision by ensuring our investigators have the tools and knowledge to uphold the highest safety standards,” Captain Badeh Jr. added.

The outcomes of the training are expected to significantly enhance NSIB’s capacity to conduct thorough and impartial investigations while contributing to accident prevention efforts.

The NSIB said the initiative is key to its long-term vision of establishing itself as a leading authority in transportation safety across Africa, positioning Nigeria as a model for best safety practices in the region.

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau is a multimodal transport agency responsible for promoting transport safety and conducting thorough and objective investigations into transport accidents and incidents across Nigeria.

The Bureau’s mandate is to identify the probable causes of accidents and advocate for safety improvements based on its findings.

As Nigeria continues to expand its transport infrastructure, the role of NSIB in ensuring safety becomes increasingly vital, as the training represents a substantial investment in human capital, preparing the country to meet the growing demands for transportation safety and providing critical expertise to support national growth.
