NSIB Confirms Location of Wreckage of Sikorsky SK76 Helicopter in Atlantic Ocean
The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has confirmed that the wreckage of the Sikorsky SK76 helicopter, registration 5N BQG, which tragically ditched in the Atlantic Ocean on 24 October 2024, has been located.
The helicopter, operated by Eastwind Aviation, was carrying eight individuals onboard when it went down near Bonny Finima.
In a recent statement signed by Mrs Bimbo Olawumi Oladeji, NSIB’s Director of Public Affairs and Family Assistance, the Bureau announced that the search and recovery team, in collaboration with allied partners, identified the wreckage during recovery dives last night.
The helicopter was found approximately 0.775 nautical miles from the FPSO Adoon at a depth of 42 metres, with coordinates recorded at Latitude 04° 13.634′ N and Longitude 008° 19.442′ E.
Recovery operations commenced immediately, resulting in the successful retrieval of the helicopter’s tail boom, which was lifted from the water earlier today.
Captain Alex Badeh Jr., the Director General of NSIB, praised the relentless efforts and teamwork shown by the search and recovery crew.
“Locating the wreckage is a critical milestone in our efforts to understand the circumstances surrounding this tragic accident,” he stated.
“The dedication and cooperation shown by all involved parties have been exceptional, and we are determined to conduct a thorough investigation to provide clarity and closure to the families of those affected,” added the NSIB boss.
Further recovery operations are ongoing, with NSIB promising to release additional updates as the process advances.
The Bureau emphasised its commitment to working alongside both national and international partners to ensure a comprehensive investigation in line with its mandate to enhance transportation safety in Nigeria.
The Bureau reaffirmed its dedication to the safety and well-being of all affected families and the public.
