NSIB, FRSC Sign Landmark Pact to Strengthen Transport Safety in Nigeria

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has entered into a strategic partnership with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to bolster safety investigations and accident response mechanisms nationwide.
The collaboration was formalised on Thursday in Abuja with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), signalling a new era of inter-agency cooperation aimed at safeguarding lives across all transport sectors – including road, aviation, maritime, and railway.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Director-General of the NSIB, Captain Alex Badeh Jr., commended the FRSC for its sustained improvements in enforcement and road safety management.
He noted that the partnership would empower the NSIB to provide more targeted safety recommendations, which in turn would support the FRSC’s operational efficiency and enhance its ability to fulfil its mandate.
“This partnership is critical to ensuring our safety protocols are not only effective but also constantly updated to address the evolving challenges in the transport sector,” Captain Badeh stated.
He emphasised that the collaboration would foster a comprehensive and integrated approach to transport safety through shared expertise, data, and resources.
According to him, such synergy would result in more robust safety investigations, timely interventions, and ultimately, the prevention of future incidents.
On his part, the Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Shehu Mohammed, underscored the importance of the partnership, describing it as a forward-thinking step toward creating a safer Nigeria.
“The signing of this MoU with NSIB is about making all our environments safer – not just the aviation space, but also the roads and railways. NSIB is responsible for safety investigations across the transport sector, and we are ready to put in the work required for this collaboration to succeed in protecting the motoring public,” he said.
The MoU provides for coordinated efforts between the two agencies in accident investigation, real-time response to transport emergencies, standardisation of safety protocols, and implementation of proactive safety measures.
With particular attention given to the road transport sector, which has witnessed a disturbing rise in traffic-related incidents, the initiative is expected to strengthen the country’s safety infrastructure significantly.
As part of the agreement, the NSIB will contribute its investigative expertise while the FRSC will apply its extensive field experience to improve overall safety outcomes.
This includes conducting joint workshops, sharing operational data, and establishing feedback mechanisms to assess and refine safety practices continually.
The Director of Public Affairs and Family Assistance at NSIB, Mrs Bimbo Olawumi Oladeji, explained that the collaboration demonstrates the Bureau’s unwavering commitment to its mandate as Nigeria’s multimodal transport safety investigation agency.
“With this partnership, NSIB reaffirms its dedication to enhancing public safety through timely, objective, and thorough investigations. We aim to ensure that every safety recommendation we issue is both actionable and aligned with global best practices,” she said.
Observers have hailed the MoU as a landmark development that could pave the way for broader reforms in Nigeria’s transport safety ecosystem.
The cooperation between NSIB and FRSC is expected to generate tangible results in accident reduction, improved investigation timelines, and better safety outcomes for all road users.
Looking ahead, both agencies pledged to maintain the momentum through sustained collaboration and innovation.
Their unified goal is to reduce transport-related fatalities and injuries and create a culture of safety that permeates every aspect of Nigeria’s transport landscape.
