NSIB Launches Investigation into Jigawa Tanker Explosion That Claimed Over 150 Lives

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has initiated an investigation into the tragic tanker explosion that occurred in Majia town, Taura Local Government Area of Jigawa State, leading to the death of over 150 people.

The devastating incident, which took place on Tuesday night, also left many residents severely injured, with the extent of the damages still being assessed.

In a preliminary report signed by Mrs Bimbo Olawumi Oladeji, Director, Public Affairs and Family Assistance at the NSIB, the Bureau said the accident occurred around 11 pm when a petrol tanker travelling from Kano to Nguru in Yobe State lost control and crashed, spilling its highly flammable contents along the road.

As residents rushed to the scene to collect the leaking fuel, the tanker suddenly exploded, unleashing a massive inferno that consumed the area and caused extensive fatalities.

In response to the tragedy, the NSIB has dispatched a specialised team of investigators to probe the circumstances leading to the crash and subsequent explosion.

The Director-General of the NSIB, Captain Alex Badeh Jr., stated that the Bureau is committed to determining the root cause of the incident and ensuring that the lessons learned from this unfortunate event will contribute to preventing similar accidents in the future.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families affected by this devastating accident. The NSIB is dedicated to uncovering the cause of the explosion and ensuring that safety measures are strengthened to avert such tragedies,” said Captain Badeh Jr.

The NSIB said its investigation team is expected to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the crash site, gather evidence, and analyse data to identify factors that may have contributed to the explosion.

The findings will be used to formulate safety recommendations aimed at mitigating the risk of future occurrences.

In light of the severity of the incident, the NSIB has also issued a public safety reminder, warning citizens of the inherent dangers of approaching tanker accidents.

“We urge the public to refrain from gathering at accident scenes, especially when fuel is involved, as such actions can have catastrophic consequences,” the Bureau said.

As the team progresses in its analysis, the NSIB has assured the public that the findings will be transparently communicated.
