NSIB to investigate runway excursion incident involving ValueJet Airlines

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has said it has been notified of the runway excursion incident involving ValueJet aircraft, which occurred at the Port Harcourt airport this afternoon.

In a statement signed by James Odaudu, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, NSIB, the Bureau confirmed that the aircraft – Bombardier CRJ-900LR aircraft with Nationality and Registration Marks 5N-BXR belonging to ValueJet Airlines overshot the runway after landing safely.

The Bureau said no fatalities were reported as the 62 passengers on board disembarked the aircraft unhurt.

The NSIB noted that it has commenced investigation to unravel the cause of the incident.

The statement: “The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau, has been notified about an incident involving a Bombardier CRJ-900LR aircraft with Nationality and Registration Marks 5N-BXR belonging to ValueJet Airlines  which occurred around 3:32pm (Local Time) on 14th November, 2023.

“The Bureau has commenced the process of unraveling the immediate and remote causes of the incidence, with our Investigators already at the scene.

“The aircraft, with 62 passengers and 5 crew upon landing at the Port Harcourt International Airport from Lagos overshot the runway at runway 03.

“There was no injury or fatality, as all the passengers and crew members were safely evacuated.and  no damage to the aircraft was reported.

“The Bureau appeals to the public and the media to avoid speculations about the likely causes,  while also respecting the privacy of those on board. 

“The NSIB is a multimodal investigation agency charged with the mandate to investigate transportation accidents and serious incidents in Nigeria with the aim of identifying the probable causes and proffer safety recommendations that can prevent reoccurrence.
